When it comes to waste, nobody wants it. The whole idea of trash is “let’s get rid of it,” and “I don’t want to think about it.” When salvage and recycling enter the scenario, the result may be less trash, but it’s never no trash.

Travel Award Allows Amgen Scholar to Present Sweet New Results

If you asked me ten years ago whether I would be studying the sugary fuzz that covers the outside of cells, I would have laughed. I was interested in psychiatric diseases and the brain. But when I saw a picture of this fuzz — what we call the glycocalyx — during my first year of medical school as an MD/PhD student, I realized that these sugars connect cells with their environment and could be the key to understanding disease.

Beware the Slippery Slope: Slips, Trips, and Falls in Healthcare Facilities

US Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics for 2014 (the most recent year published) show that total recordable case rate for hospitals (injury and illness cases per 100 full-time workers) is 6.2. The hospital injury rate is higher than in mining (3.8), hazardous waste treatment and disposal (4.6), and manufacturing (4.0). Now that should set off an alarm for health and safety professionals.

Surprisingly, though, the second highest cause of injury in hospitals is from slips, trips and falls (STF). In the United States, STF by hospital employees account for 25% of injuries; in the United Kingdom, SFTs account for almost half of the workplace injuries in healthcare. These STFs can, at minimum, result in a decrease in the healthcare worker’s ability to do his or her job effectively,

The Simple Secret Behind Radical Leadership

My dad wasn’t a mechanic. He didn’t work in a repair shop. I wouldn’t call him a gearhead.

And yet, he was always the first call when someone had a flat tire. He was on speed dial for any neighbor seeking a helping hand, a little encouragement or guidance during tough times.

My dad was plenty busy, running two businesses and raising eight children – yes, eight – in Lansdowne, a blue-collar town just outside Baltimore, Maryland.

That didn’t stop him from playing Mr. Fix It whenever possible.
