I was recently invited to attend a forum hosted by Dell and The Atlantic – a magazine covering a wide array of subjects, including business, culture and technology. The event, Cracking the Code: The Next Generation of Women in STEM, invited an audience, ranging from chief technology officers to storybook authors, to discuss one of the most pressing issues of our time: How do we engage the next generation of girls and women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics? Much of the dialogue encompassing the event connected me to many thoughts on the ways we can engage young girls in STEM.

International non-profit, the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), has released its 20th anniversary annual report. Over the last two decades the MSC has worked with scientists, NGOs and the seafood industry to set a globally recognised benchmark for sustainable fishing. Those organisations that meet the MSC’s standards for sustainability and traceability can then use the blue MSC label on seafood products.

After Hurricane Harvey hit Texas, Leah Halbina reached out to friends in the Houston area to see how she could help. When she found out about Sketch City, an open, nonprofit community of technology advocates and civic hackers that used technology to organize rescue efforts, help victims locate their nearest shelter and satisfy other pressing needs, she jumped in to help. Shortly after, Leah had to use the same technology in her home state of Florida as Hurricane Irma approached and made landfall.
