This week, Global Sourcing Council's 17 Weeks for 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) explores SDG 11 with examples of corporate action.

SDG 11 calls to “Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.” Its targets address housing, slums, transport and road safety, accessibility, sustainable urbanization, cultural and natural heritage, disasters, air quality and waste management, and green public spaces.

TeamCITGO Enhances Natural Habitats and Environmental Education at the Oso Bay Wetlands Preserve in Corpus Christi

Volunteers from the CITGO Corpus Christi Refinery and local students came together for a beach cleanup at the Oso Bay Wetlands Preserve and Learning Center, a 162-acre natural sanctuary maintained by the Corpus Christi Parks and Recreation Department. Students from Cunningham Middle School and Foy H. Moody High School worked with TeamCITGO, an employee-run community service group, to clear the beach of trash and plant native vegetation. Afterwards, experts provided students with an opportunity to learn more about environmental conservation at the preserve.

Ghetto Film School's Teen Filmmakers Have Their Scripts Read by Hollywood Stars at Fundraiser Co-hosted by James Murdoch and Brett Ratner

A cast of Hollywood actors including Max Greenfield ("New Girl"), Grace Gealey ("Empire"), Dascha Polanco ("Joy") and others gathered at the legendary Hilhaven Lodge in Beverly Hills to perform two short-film scripts written by the teenage students from Ghetto Film School. The May 25 table reading event, co-hosted by 21st Century Fox CEO and GFS board member James Murdoch, served as both a celebration of and a fundraiser for the organization, which teaches filmmaking to young people from communities traditionally underrepresented in Hollywood. 21CF is the founding sponsor of GFS Los Angeles, which opened its doors in June 2014.

At the 1959 World Health Assembly, Soviet scientist Victor Zhdanov put forth a radical idea: a global campaign to eradicate smallpox, a disease that first surfaced more than 10,000 years ago and which is estimated to have caused 300–500 million deaths during the 20th century alone. Local and multinational campaigns had shown great promise in defeating the disease across North America and Europe, as well as parts of South America, but a global campaign was an audacious suggestion. Nothing of the sort had ever been attempted. Yet the Soviet Union and the United States, two of the world’s most populous countries, had successfully rid their nations of smallpox. If this was possible, why not take on the world?
