Dave Macready, CEO of Old Mutual South Africa ‘Leadership Builds On Vision, Passion And Belief’

When I am asked about leadership, I immediately think of the great leaders I have known who have exuded vision, belief and passion.

Our own Madiba embodied all three these qualities, shining a light in the dark for all of us to follow and creating a passionate, contagious belief in a better, more sustainable future for all South Africans. He demonstrated that by inspiring the inner core of those he led, a great leader can define a new reality and make possible what was previously impossible or unimaginable.

I hate the term “female entrepreneurship.” We don’t call entrepreneurial endeavors led by men, “male entrepreneurship.” We just call it entrepreneurship. Unintentionally or not, “female entrepreneurship” implies a rare, or “wow, women can start and lead businesses? Really? Since when,” distinction. The gap widens as we separate the genders into distinct categories. I’m not the only one calling for us to crack the glass for equality on this ceiling.

I had already spent the previous four weeks as an Amgen Scholar at Caltech getting to know my compatriots there, but this was new territory on another campus and with every Amgen Scholar in the country.
