Helping Where Help is Needed

When the hours after Hurricane Maria turned to days, Virgen Colon of Juncos, Puerto Rico, grew increasingly frightened. Without power in her flooded house, she needed electricity to operate the air conditioning and fans which kept her son Jan cool. He is 23, born with severe birth defects that have left him bed-bound his entire life. He also needs oxygen and feeding tubes, and the various medical devices that help him breathe and survive required power to operate. Finally, desperate, she called the mayor of Juncos. He solved her problem with one call to Medtronic.

The Caterpillar Advanced Cabin Filtration (ACF) system has been designed to promote optimal air quality and operator health, as well as to comply with increasingly strict global regulations on safe exposure limits of airborne contaminants and particulates.

UPS Dramatically Increases Use of Renewable Natural Gas

UPS today announced an agreement with Big Ox Energy to purchase 10 million gallon equivalents of renewable natural gas (RNG) per year. This is the largest investment in RNG to date for the company, and the agreement runs through 2024. In addition to the agreement with Big Ox, UPS signed a five-year agreement earlier this year with AMP energy for 1.5 million gallon equivalents of RNG per year from the Fair Oaks dairy farm in Indiana. The RNG agreements will help UPS reach a key sustainability goal: 40 percent of all ground transportation fleet fuel from sources other than conventional gasoline and diesel by 2025.

We recently wrapped up our annual Employee Giving Campaign for United Way, and are excited and honored to share that Comcast NBCUniversal employees collectively pledged nearly $8 million to help improve communities nationwide. Combined with more than $2 million in matching grants from the Comcast Foundation, our company is providing $10 million in total support, and that means hundreds of United Way affiliates that are in our very own communities will continue to thrive and help people who are most in need.

Bringing More Than a Hot Meal

Jason Baskin knows a thing or two about quick, tasty and easy meals. Baskin is the senior brand manager for Hormel® Compleats® microwave meals and has spent the last four years making sure the brand delivers a satisfying and convenient meal in 60 seconds.

What he and his team found, however, is that there is another population that sees the Hormel® Compleats® products as much more.

“We kept hearing about how these products were helping older adults stay independent and remain in their homes. We’d receive incredibly moving stories from this population and their kids and grandkids about how Hormel® Compleats® products were one of the few ‘real meals’ they could prepare for themselves.”

So for Baskin and his team, partnering with Meals on Wheels America became a way to make a difference.

These relationships include both financial and volunteer support. We offer two full days of paid time off for partners to spend volunteering with an approved non-profit organization. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is a place where people come in search of answers for their children’s tough medical conditions; answers that could impact their lives and, maybe someday, the lives of those you love. More than 1,700 children and their families call The Inn “A Place Like Home” each year, as they battle life-threatening illnesses together.
