Agriculture in the Anthropocene: The Challenge is the Solution

The world’s farmers not only must feed a growing population, but also cope with a rapidly changing climate.

Nestlé to Source Only Cage-Free Eggs by 2025

Our purpose is to enhance quality of life and contribute to a healthier future. This includes ensuring decent welfare standards for animals that are reared for the ingredients used in our products.

To help drive welfare improvements for egg-laying hens, our goal is to use only cage-free eggs for all of our food products globally by 2025. This includes all shell eggs and egg products (e.g. whole egg powder and liquid, egg white powder and liquid) directly sourced as ingredients by Nestlé.

We’re Putting Our Money Where Your Mouth Is

Consumers are drawn to companies that share their values. We get that, and Nestlé has shown what we stand for, whether through our investments in helping families thrive, our support for and commitment to mitigating climate change, or our work to create strong career opportunities for Americans of all backgrounds. Our purpose is as clear today as it was during the earliest days of our existence: enhancing quality of life and contributing to a healthier future. Nestlé believes contributing to society is what will ensure the long-term success of our company.

Affordable v. Eco-Friendly: You Shouldn’t Have to Choose

Last April, Walmart launched Project Gigaton, a project that invites our merchandise suppliers to join us in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the products they make and the way they make them, taking 1 gigaton (yes, that’s really a word - a billion metric tons) of emissions out of the atmosphere. That’s equal to all the emissions produced from all the homes in California over three years.

General Mills Works to Make the Cocoa Sector More Sustainable

General Mills is working to make the cocoa sector more sustainable and to reduce child labor. In 2013, the company made a commitment to sustainably source its ingredients, with the goal to sustainably source 100 percent of its top 10 ingredients by 2020. Those top 10 ingredients include cocoa, oats, wheat, corn, dairy, fiber packaging, vanilla, palm oil, sugar cane and sugar beets, which represent over 50 percent of its annual raw material purchases.

What Every Chef Knows & Every Business Needs to Learn

Each year a third of the world’s food is wasted, along with the resources used to produce and transport it, according to the United Nations. Considering our already overburdened environment, reduction is an obvious and immediate priority.

Our individual actions can make a dent in the problem, no doubt. Consumers are responsible for 43% of food loss and waste along the food supply chain. Meal planning, freezing leftovers and other simple steps to reduce waste are good, cost-saving habits for us all.

The business community, however, can make a bigger dent more quickly by embracing its own new habits and influencing consumer behavior.

Nestlé USA Commits to Higher Standards of Welfare for Broiler Chickens by 2024

Nestlé’s purpose is to enhance quality of life and contribute to a healthier future and this extends to the treatment of animals in our supply chain. We are today pledging that by 2024, we will strive to source all of the broiler chickens we use as ingredients for our U.S. food portfolio from sources meeting a higher standard of animal welfare, building on our global Commitment on Farm Animal Welfare.

A Global Passion for Fighting Hunger

Picture this: It was a brisk, sunny January day in Davos, Switzerland in 2007. Ken Powell, former CEO of General Mills, was attending the World Economic Forum when Kofi Annan, then Secretary-General of the United Nations, challenged Powell and General Mills to help the world’s hungry.

Powell’s answer, ultimately, was to harness what we knew about food and connect with Africa’s small and growing food companies across Africa.

Our food knowledge is deep and wide, and includes solving technical problems, ensuring food safety and developing products.

Food Waste Documentary Highlights Solutions

Because of innovative work we are doing at our Murfreesboro, Tennessee, plant, General Mills was invited to be included in “WASTED! The Story of Food Waste,” a documentary making its debut in theaters and online today.

Since August 2015, our Murfreesboro plant has been processing leftover whey from Yoplait Greek lines to produce 10 percent (1.6 megawatts) of the plant’s electrical needs.

In addition, excess heat from its biogas generator has reduced the plant’s natural gas needs by 10 percent.
