Habitat Hammers Back: Habitat for Humanity Receives Major Support for Hurricane Recovery As Leading Housing Nonprofit Begins Its Response

Four organizations will serve as keystone partners of Habitat for Humanity’s response to Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, each making contributions of $1 million or more to support the Habitat Hammers Back initiative. The gifts from the Dow Chemical Company, General Motors, Thrivent Financial and a group of American wind energy companies will support on-the-ground responses to the hurricanes in Texas, Florida and other affected areas.

AEG Extends 11-Year Partnership with Read to a Child to Increase Literacy in Los Angeles

AEG, the world’s leading sports and entertainment company, is continuing its 11-year partnership with Read to a Child, a national nonprofit literacy and mentoring organization, as a Corporate Reading Partner to increase literacy in Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD).

Each week throughout the school year, AEG employees volunteer to meet with a student at Tenth Street Elementary in Pico-Union and read aloud to them as part of Read to a Child’s Lunchtime Reading Program.

Walmart and the Walmart Foundation Announce at Least $1 Million Toward Hurricane Irma Relief and Recovery

In anticipation of Hurricane Irma, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation have made a commitment to provide support for relief efforts through cash and product donations of at least $1 million to organizations helping in response. “We are deeply concerned about the devastating impact Irma is expected to have on the families and communities we serve,” said Kathleen McLaughlin, president of the Walmart Foundation and chief sustainability officer for Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. “We are committed to recovery efforts for our customers, associates and neighbors and will be there to help them through this difficult time.”

More than 200 Consumers Energy employees and contract personnel are headed from Michigan to Florida to assist local electric companies preparing for Hurricane Irma’s landfall by late this weekend.

Bringing Medical Care to Communities in Suriname

In close cooperation with Suriname’s Ministry of Health and Project C.U.R.E., Newmont Suriname helped bring vital medical services to residents of villages near the Merian mine last month. A team of nine medical professionals and volunteers treated more than 300 patients during the four-day clinic.
