As MLK Day approaches, Common Impact is encouraging our partners to make it a day "on," not a day off. To honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's legacy were lifting up our inspiring employee volunteers who have a strong commitment to civic engagement and are deeply involved in strengthening the livelihood of their local communities.

Arrow Electronics’ employees supported an Hour of Code event at Accenture’s Denver office last month that was attended by local students and their families. Arrow provided 20 laptops for the event, and employees volunteered to coach students through the event’s interactive coding modules.

In the midst of a water crisis in India – where 77 million people don't have access to safe drinking water – the Green Team at the Ingersoll Rand Sahibabad facility built a rainwater harvesting system to collect and filter rainwater before putting it back into the water table. This restores about 1.2 million gallons of rainwater annually, offsetting 75 percent of the water the plant uses in its operations. In addition, the Green Team reduced the facility's water consumption by 43 percent by implementing standard work and making important upgrades to its wastewater treatment plants.

Debswana, a joint venture between De Beers Group and the Government of the Republic of Botswana, has already invested P6.5 million in the programme.

While Clemson University came within a victory of making it to the College Football Playoff National Championship, it can claim, along with the University of Akron, the co-championship of the 2017 GameDay Recycling Challenge (GDRC), the national collegiate football recycling competition. The GameDay Recycling Challenge is produced through a partnership of the College and University Recycling Coalition (CURC), Keep America Beautiful, RecycleMania, Inc., and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Throughout the month of November, JetBlue customers and crewmembers checked in for good on three volunteer trips with some of the airline’s non-profit partners. More than 8,000 customers entered the #CheckInForGood contest. Nearly one hundred customers and crewmembers participated in trips focusing on the three JetBlue For Good pillars: youth and education, community and the environment. These trips took place around #GivingTuesday, the international day of giving kicking off the holiday season.

It’s been a challenging year for 10-year-old Teryn Buster. But on November 3, her spirits were flying high — as the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade balloons recently did — during a visit to Macy’s Parade Studio in Moonachie, New Jersey, headquarters of the world-famous parade. Inside this warehouse is where most of the parade’s balloons and floats are constructed.
