The Relationship Between Corporate Sustainability and Human Development

By: Bahar Gidwani

A number of years ago, CSRHub showed that its measures of corporate sustainability correlate with the level of development of countries. We found a correlation of 28% for 27 developed countries, but poor correlation with human conditions in less developed countries.

Chicago Regional Recycling Project Aims to Recover Clean, In-Demand Plastic Materials from Area Hospitals

The Healthcare Plastics Recycling Council (HPRC), in collaboration with SPI: The Plastics Industry Trade Association (SPI), announced today the launch of a multi-hospital plastics recycling project in Chicago. Focused on non-infectious plastic packaging and products collected from clinical areas of hospitals, the project seeks to demonstrate a viable business model for recycling healthcare plastics. The target goal is to recycle 100 tons of plastics over the project duration.

A Drink to Water Conservation

The drought in California – home to almost 40 million people and a $54 billion agricultural industry – has helped raise awareness of the value of water. Since the first World Water Day, on March 22, 1993, water has increased in its prominence on the international stage as the recognized lifeblood of society and the environment upon which we depend. Water scarcity and the wise use of this resource are more pertinent than ever.

Healthcare Plastics Recycling: Making It Happen at Your Hospital

It can feel like quite a challenge to set up a new hospital recycling program that includes plastic from patient care areas. Fortunately, the know-how is available and HPRC is here to help. Successful operation of such a recycling effort can significantly increase the amount of material recycled. As much as one-fifth of a hospital’s waste can be prevented from going to a land fill or incinerator, according to studies of waste generation and recycling.

When your job is helping a company find ways to achieve zero waste across its global operations, you have to look beyond the obvious for opportunities. Who knew that this year, a plastic Easter basket could be one?

Impact for Change: Why Business Impacts Matter?

Swazi sewing shop might seem a surprising place to see the impacts of big business first hand. But it’s where I found myself one morning in 2013, travelling as a guest of a big global brand. The smiling owner opened the door to us. She was smartly dressed, and rightly proud of the enterprise she’d grown. I’ll never forget the noise of her workshop. About two dozen women were hard at work, mostly from the local village. They were producing uniforms for the factory owned by our client down the road.
