Every year on November 11, we honor those who have made sacrifices to serve our country in the military. Americans know this day as Veterans Day, and we honor those who have served and are still with us. In Canada it’s called Remembrance Day, and we honor those who have sacrificed their lives for their country.

For military veterans who have proudly served, there can be physical and emotional injuries that make it difficult to transition back to civilian life – some estimates say as many as 20 percent of returning vets suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder. Barbara Blair has touched the lives of many struggling vets in need of companionship through her efforts as the Georgia chapter director of Pets for Vets, where she leads state-wide programs for the national organization dedicated to veterans and rescued shelter pets.
With Veteran’s Day just around the corner, we wanted to pause and take a moment to reflect and share our thanks to those who’ve dedicated their lives in service to our great country. We’re proud of the many men and women in the armed forces who’ve fought and continue to fight for freedom.
Lisa Colella is the president and founder of Healing Household 6, an organization dedicated to connecting caregivers of U.S. veterans with essential support as families face transitioning from active duty to the civilian world. When Lisa’s husband was forced into a medical retirement after he suffered a brain injury during deployment, the mother of two was forced to confront some issues that threatened to break up her family. Realizing there were others like her in the veteran community who needed critical resources, Lisa, now based in Charleston, South Carolina, started a Facebook group for families of veterans in an effort to strengthen the family foundation through support, and that initial network bloomed into what is now HH6.
This is the first Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) Report that we’ve issued since spinning off PayPal in 2015. Given the impact we knew this organizational change would have on our culture, size and business strategy, we made a deliberate decision to wait until we had at least a full year as a standalone company behind us before issuing this report.
Veterans Day is an opportunity for the entire nation to collectively thank and honor military members and their families for living a life dedicated to service, and at Comcast NBCUniversal, we are extending this gratitude to the military community throughout the year.
Since 2010, we have hired more than 13,000 Veterans, National Guard and Reserve members, and military spouses, including many who are graduates of our country’s military service academies. Our Veterans Network employee resource group has grown to more than 6,000 members nationwide, and in the last two years we’ve led more than 100 military-focused community service projects as part of Comcast Cares Day, strengthening longstanding partnerships with dozens of military and veteran service organizations making impacts.
Sodexo, world leader in Quality of Life Services and a partner to the United States Marine Corps, joined forces with that organization last weekend in support of its annual Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) Kids Run. This event, a one-mile just-for-fun run for kids age 5-12, is an annual lead-up activity to the largest marathon in the world that doesn't offer prize money. Sodexo has sponsored the event since 2003.

After leaving the U.S. Army in 2015, Derek struggled to find purpose outside of the military – but he found his place when he heard about The Mission Continues, a nonprofit that empowers veterans by engaging them in service to the community. Through the organization’s fellowship program, Derek volunteered for six months at Up2Us Sports, where Derek recruited and mentored veteran coaches to give underprivileged youth the opportunity to develop positive relationships with adults. At the conclusion of his fellowship, he was hired full-time by Up2Us.
