Skills-Based Volunteering

MLK Day of Service is an opportunity to remember history and re-commit ourselves as citizens by volunteering in service to one another. It is also a time to consider how much work still remains to fulfill Dr. King’s dream. We at Common Impact believe service is a powerful tool for strengthening the communities in which we live and work.

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s commitment to service, we are spotlighting an incredible story from Stephanie Burgess, one of our outstanding skills-based volunteers from Charles Schwab. Thank you, Stephanie, for sharing your heartfelt story with us and for allowing us to see the true impact that skills-based volunteering can have, both for the volunteer and the nonprofit organization.

In honor of MLK Day on Monday, we are spotlighting an inspiring story from Steve Neff, one of Common Impact's board members and Head of Technology and Global Services at Fidelity Investments. Steve's commitment to service and dedication to volunteerism provides our team with the motivation to continue to fulfill our mission of strengthening the local communities in which we live and work on a daily basis.

As MLK Day approaches, Common Impact is encouraging our partners to make it a day "on," not a day off. In the midst of a water crisis in India – where 77 million people don't have access to safe drinking water – the Green Team at the Ingersoll Rand Sahibabad facility built a rainwater harvesting system to collect and filter rainwater before putting it back into the water table. This restores about 1.2 million gallons of rainwater annually, offsetting 75 percent of the water the plant uses in its operations. In addition, the Green Team reduced the facility's water consumption by 43 percent by implementing standard work and making important upgrades to its wastewater treatment plants.

As 2017 comes to a close, Keep America Beautiful looks back with pride and a sense of accomplishment about many of our favorite "Beautiful Moments" from this year.

This holiday season, we’re spotlighting May Chen, one of our inspiring employee volunteers from Fidelity Investments. May has now volunteered on two skills-based volunteering projects, where she helped develop a Salesforce community application for Citizen Schools and an IT assessment and strategic roadmap with Metrocrest Services. Throughout both projects, May has been an incredible team player and is extremely dedicated to developing the most effective deliverable for her nonprofit partners.

Tis the season to reflect, refresh and recharge as 2017 comes to a close. While this year has certainly had its ups and downs, the Common Impact team is grateful for the passion and dedication of our partners who continue to drive our mission forward. As we head into the last week of the year, we spent some time reflecting on (and discovering!) what truly motivates us to do the work we do every day to strengthen the communities in which we live and work.
