Community Involvement

Over the past eight years, The Scotts Miracle-Gro Foundation has helped create 1,000 community gardens across America. We’ve seen firsthand how gardens transform communities, but even more so, people’s lives. Here’s the story of one of those gardens, the Cambridge Community Garden in Cambridge, New York.

San Antonio's annual Fiesta celebration, which began in 1891 and kicks off this year on April 19, is known for its tradition of artful medals commissioned by various organizations and businesses. For the second year, Whole Foods Market stores in San Antonio will sell unique medals designed by store graphic artists to celebrate Fiesta with sales benefiting Whole Kids Foundation.

Today, Whole Kids Foundation announced 602 new school and school-garden-support-organization grant recipients. The recipients cover 46 U.S. states and nine Canadian provinces, providing educational opportunities around agriculture, ecology, nutrition and business for 356,798 students.

With months of ideation, research, creation and pitching behind them, three schools have been named national winners in the $2 million* Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Contest from Samsung Electronics America, Inc. – a nationwide competition that challenges 6th through 12th graders to use STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) to address real-world issues and inspire change in their local communities.

Xylem’s site in Guelph, Ontario conducted a Walk for Water on April 10th as part of Xylem Watermark’s Make Your Mark 30 Day Challenge. Volunteers carried 4-liter jugs of water while walking a 5 km route to bring attention to the issues of water scarcity in many countries and to try to understand what millions of people around the world must do to obtain clean water for their families and homes. The walk ended at the Guelph Food Bank, where the volunteers donated their jugs of water.

Keep America Beautiful, the nation’s leading community improvement nonprofit, is accepting applications for the 2018-2019 National Youth Advisory Council through June 8. Keep America Beautiful’s National Youth Advisory Council creates a framework for youth engagement, providing a unique opportunity for 10 high school students from diverse backgrounds across the nation to participate in a service-learning and leadership development program.

A short video message from teens to their peers to encourage safe driving habits might be all that is needed to avoid dangerous driving situations. That is the premise behind the Toyota TeenDrive365 Video Challenge, which drew more than 1,300 entries from students across the country.

The Solano Hispanic Chamber of Commerce celebrated over 11 years as a local chamber of diversity during its annual Awards and Recognition Gala on March 10, 2018 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Fairfield. Solano County students and business leaders were recognized for their achievements, contributions and leadership.

When Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) was faced with a time of change and uncertainty, they discovered that an employee-nominated grants program wasapowerful catalyst for boosting morale and forging meaningful connections between the company, its employees and the community. Hear from Kathy Gu, Program Manager, Living Progress, HPE, as she shares how they revolutionized their grantmaking program by leveraging data from their strongest group of potential advocates: their own people.

In February, EarthEcho International, along with partner Love A Sea Turtle of Greenville, North Carolina, hosted a training for volunteers from Xylem’s Morrisville location. Nine Xylem employees worked with over 100 students, guiding them through the EarthEcho Water Challenge and helping them to learn about the local aquatic ecosystem. In addition, students were able to interact with the new STEAM Lab that Love A Sea Turtle and the City of Greenville opened at River Park North. This STEAM Lab includes the first permanent EarthEcho Water Challenge field testing station to engage members of the community in the program, and was officially unveiled on World Water Day this year.
