How an Indonesian Coconut Plantation Inspired Mars' “Aha Moment” on Sustainability

For those of us in the field of corporate social responsibility, Mars is well-known for its environmental leadership. The company’s goals are therefore nothing short of ambitious. But if anyone can help the company meet those targets, it is chief procurement and sustainability officer Barry Parkin, who believes that big goals drive big innovation.

Plastic pollution has become a trending topic over the past year. Plastic waste is such a critical issue, it was even the theme of this year’s Earth Day. With stakeholders from all industries working to decrease the impact of plastic pollutants, National Geographic kicked-off a multifaceted campaign leaning on its aptitude for storytelling in the hopes of reducing global reliance on single-use plastics.

Is the Commodity Era Over?

I’ve recently begun to wonder if we’re moving away from the world of commodities as we’ve known them for hundreds of years. The buying, selling, trading and hedging of commodities like cocoa, grains and energy have been stalwarts of global trade. For decades, people in corporate procurement have sourced raw materials from around the world based on defined specifications and quality standards.

World Bee Day Deserves All the Buzz It's Getting

Honey bees and other pollinators are essential for the reproduction of more than 85% of the world' flowering plants, and much of the food we eat. As a result, these creatures are essential players in support of Sustainable Development Goals 2 (Zero Hunger) and 15 (Life on Land). But they are under threat from such factors as land use changes, agriculture chemicals, large-scale monoculture and climate change

Health and Wellness: One of the Cornerstones of Green Buildings

Architects, designers, and contractors are now commonly engaged in new construction, renovation and redesign projects intended to have smallest environmental and climate footprint possible. The factors that contribute to “green buildings” are fairly intuitive: energy efficiency and alternative energy sources, reduced water consumption, utilization of recycled materials, and low-emitting building materials and maintenance products. One of the cornerstones of this movement is the push for “healthy buildings,” addressing occupant health, comfort, and wellness. After all, the building’s primary function is to serve its occupants’ needs. As one would expect, it’s the details that matter, and risks abound. Fortunately, there are multiple rating systems and certifications available to help.
