World Hand Hygiene Day is May 5th. This day reminds us that hand hygiene is important today, and every day. And it is especially important in healthcare settings where hand hygiene reduces the risk of patients contracting infections and developing sepsis.
This year, the global theme for World Hand Hygiene Day is ‘It’s in your hands – prevent sepsis in health care’, set by the Private Organization for Patient Safety and the World Health Organization (WHO).
As part of World Hand Hygiene Day, we have developed an easy to remember call to action in the form of 3 steps, with the aim to help healthcare professionals (HCPs) reduce infections and sepsis among patients.
Think hygiene. Act to prevent. Care for patients. Or put more simply: Think. Act. Care.
Each year sepsis causes on average six million deaths worldwide. It is the primary cause of death from infection and is more common than heart attacks. This is why the Private Organization for Patient Safety and the World Health Organization (WHO) have centered the theme for this year’s May 5th World Hand Hygiene Day on the ways of preventing sepsis through appropriate hand hygiene.

Nestlé Waters North America, in partnership with SMUD, today announced agreements that will allow its facility in Sacramento, California to be powered by 100% renewable energy. The agreement is a major step towards parent company Nestlé’s global goal to transition to 100% renewable electricity use in its operations.
The clean, renewable electricity generated by SMUD will be used by Nestlé Waters North America to produce sustainably-sourced, healthy beverage options for Californians, including the company’s Arrowhead® Brand Mountain Spring Water and Nestlé® Pure Life® Purified Water. By transitioning its electrical power needs to renewable sources, the carbon footprint of the Nestlé Waters factory will be reduced by more than 21,279 metric tons of carbon dioxide over the next three years.
Tetra Pak aims to launch a paper straw that is suitable for its portion-sized carton packages before the end of the year, as part of a broader programme to help address the issue of plastic straw waste.
Straws play an integral functional role on portion packages, but if not properly disposed of, they then become part of the plastics waste problem. The company has been working to encourage consumers to push straws “back in the pack” once empty, so they can be collected along with the rest of the package. Now, work is under way to develop a paper straw that is suitable for use on its portion-size carton packages.
