SB’16 Takeaways: What We Learned Last Week at Sustainable Brands 2016

Last week, the Cone Communications team headed out to Sustainable Brands for four days of conversation around "Activating Purpose." We heard from executives, startups, thought leaders and change makers on how they are activating social and environmental initiatives within their organizations – and how their messages are being amplified to key stakeholders.

CITGO and Women’s Shelter of South Texas Support Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Victims

Every nine seconds in the United States, a woman is assaulted or beaten, according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. To raise funds to provide services to domestic violence and sexual assault victims in the Coastal Bend, CITGO Petroleum Corporation is partnering with the Women’s Shelter of South Texas to support the shelter’s 2016 Great Expectations Speaker Series Luncheon. This year’s fundraiser will feature actress and activist Kathy Najimy.

Timberland Shares What ‘Activating Purpose’ Means to its Brand at 2016 Sustainable Brands Conference

Last week, global outdoor lifestyle brand Timberland joined thought leaders, brand innovators, designers and business leaders from around the globe to explore how brands are Activating Purpose to scale impact, at Sustainable Brands San Diego. To kick off the opening night of the three-day conference, Timberland, in partnership with the Smallholder Farmers Alliance (SFA) and award-winning filmmakers Found Object, held an outdoor screening of “KOMBIT: The Cooperative.” This documentary highlights an innovative private/public partnership between Timberland and the SFA that is changing the landscape of smallholder farming and bringing new hope to the people of Haiti.

The cast and crew of this year's The X-Files event series on FOX made a concerted effort during production to give back to the communities in British Columbia where they filmed. Building on the socially conscious themes of episodes like "Home Again," about gentrification in major cities, the team led projects to support the homeless community in Vancouver, which was standing in for Philadelphia in the episode. The production crew worked to integrate the homeless into the show, distributed food vouchers, and donated supplies to local shelters.
