The Safer Choice Partner of the Year Award recognizes businesses and organizations that advance the goal of the program to promote chemical safety.

Earlier this week I visited the Floyd County YMCA with my LIVESTRONG teammate Polly Jenkins and our partners at Eli Lily to see a YMCA program in action and to discuss our partnership. I have always heard great things about the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program, but I left this site visit with a whole new and fresh perspective. In short, I was blown away. I wish I could have videoed this whole experience, or even better, brought you all with me. One thing is for sure – LIVESTRONG at the YMCA isn’t just an exercise program – it is helping people return to LIFE after cancer. It’s just as much about the rebuilding spirit and the soul, as it is about the rebuilding the body.

Forest Gardens in Senegal Help Subsistence Farmers Thrive

After decades of backbreaking subsistence farming, Malik Ndao faced a bleak future. Despite years of work cultivating his fields, Malik could barely grow enough crops in Senegal’s barren land and arid soil to feed his family, much less make a living. He was often forced to leave his wife and five children for months in search of additional work to support the family. “I used to leave my mother and wife for the entire dry season, and still I struggled to bring home $20,” Malik recalls from years earning tips pushing wheelbarrows and carrying boxes. Hunger drove him to scavenge the local forest for wood and fruit, where he gathered anything he could eat or sell. Barely surviving, he could only dream of a better life.
