Northern Trust announced today that it is one of 104 companies included in Bloomberg’s first sector-neutral Gender-Equality Index (GEI).
For inclusion in the index, Northern Trust submitted a survey created by Bloomberg in partnership with third-party groups including Catalyst, Women’s Word Banking, Working Mother Media, National Women’s Law Center, and National Partnership for Women & Families. Those included on this year’s index scored at or above Bloomberg’s global threshold to reflect disclosure and the achievement or adoption of best-in-class statistics and policies.

With all of this focus on women and gender equality continuing to dominate conversations in the media, it’s no surprise that consumers are taking notice – something that companies should not take lightly as the majority of Americans (76 percent) say they would boycott a company based on corporate values. Even more notable, is that more than eighty percent (84 percent) rank women’s rights as one of the most pressing issues they expect companies to address. Northern Trust, an investment management firm with 17,800 employees, takes the top spot. The 128-year-old, Chicago-based company continuously delivers “widespread Diversity at Work training,” according to its website. Among Northern Trust’s top executives, women make up 38%, a level significantly higher than the 27% observed among S&P 500 companies. African-Americans make up 23% of the board. “We seek an inclusive environment where our unique mix of attributes and diversity of perspectives can serve as catalysts for innovation,” says Northern Trust CEO Michael O’Grady.
PNC Financial Services announced today that it is one of over 100 companies from ten sectors to join the inaugural 2018 Bloomberg Gender-Equality Index (GEI). Launched January 22, 2018, the reference index measures gender equality across internal company statistics, employee policies, external community support and engagement and gender-conscious product offerings.
