The Business and Societal Case for Privacy

American companies experienced nearly 500 data breaches in 2016 alone, and governments around the world are beginning to require more from private firms when it comes to protecting user data.

Most notably, the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) became enforceable in May of this year. The new regulation requires companies to, among other things, receive consent from users in order to store their personal data—and it applies to all companies that serve European citizens, whether the company is based in Europe or not.

While compliance with a new regulation often seems burdensome to global firms, data shows that the type of privacy policies required under the GDPR echo a rising clarion call from consumers.

What New U.S. Data Privacy Laws Mean for Business

The frequency and intensity of data breaches are on the rise worldwide. More than 4.5 billion records were compromised in the first half of 2018, a 133 percent increase over last year, according to Gemalto’s Breach Level Index. Numbers like these make consumers understandably wary of sharing their personal information with companies, and they also represent a significant risk for the world’s top firms.

Goldcorp Accelerates the Changing Future of Mining With #DisruptMining 2019

Goldcorp is pleased to present #DisruptMining 2019, co-hosted by KPMG. The mining industry’s innovation accelerator challenge and live finale event will return on March 3, 2019, during the annual Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) conference in Toronto.

Now in its third year, #DisruptMining aims to encourage new ideas, spawn new technologies, and tackle some of the mining industry’s biggest challenges – and opportunities!

Air-Bending at Borden: Compressed Air

Underground mining tools usually include a mix of mechanical and pneumatic tools such as handheld jacklegs and stoper drills. Mechanical equipment such as bolters can now be operated remotely keeping the operator at a safe distance from hazards in the work area. Hand-held tools require cumbersome connections to water and compressed air to function and are heavy to lift, making them difficult to maneuver at the risk of musculoskeletal injuries to the worker. Pressurized air and water lines underground can also be a risk as they age and deteriorate in underground conditions, faulty valves on compressed air lines have caused serious accidents in the industry.

With worker safety in mind, Borden has banned the use of jacklegs and stopers, which are pneumatic hand tools.

Air-Bending at Borden: Ventilation on Demand

Worker health and safety is of the utmost importance at Goldcorp and air quality is a high priority in underground operations. Ventilation fans, air ducts, and infrastructure such as fresh air intake raises, are necessary to distribute fresh air, and as a result are indispensable to ensure the health, safety and comfort of anyone working underground. However, as mine development progresses deeper, costs rise as it takes more effort to deliver quality air.

To conserve energy and save money without compromising safety and air quality, Borden has implemented a Ventilation on Demand (VoD) system.

The Business and Societal Case for Privacy

While compliance with a new regulation often seems burdensome to global firms, data shows that the type of privacy policies required under the GDPR echo a rising clarion call from consumers, who studies show are increasingly concerned about misuse of their data.

#DisruptMining Continues to Accelerate the Pace of Change in Mining

Goldcorp is pleased to announce the third annual #DisruptMining innovation challenge and live finale event will be presented on Sunday, March 3, 2019 during the annual Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) conference in Toronto, Canada.

Shedding an Outmoded Paper Trail in Serbia

Let’s time-travel to Serbia, circa 1999: it was a time before smartphones or Wi-Fi. The largest hard disk available had a 340MB capacity and cost USD$499. Meanwhile, the volume of printed paper generated for record-keeping and the demands of the modern age was reaching new heights with each passing day. Today, every consumer product we desire is ’one click away.’
