A Supply Chain of Freedom: Made by Free Women

Sustainability and human rights are top-of-mind issues at today’s most successful businesses, and it’s time we all take a hard look at where we source our purchases – from the department store all the way up to the boardroom to bring an end to modern slavery.

Ecocentricity Blog: Come on Down!

I want to ask the exact same question of all of us, whether a gameshow contestant or just a normal person – why do so many people want a car? For anyone reading out there, and I’m serious about this, I want to know if you have the same childhood memory. I mean, I can’t be the only one. So please, sound off in the comments if this rings a bell or two.

Post-Secondary Students in BC and MB Recognized for Their Efforts to Build a Greener Canada

Students at the University of British Columbia Okanagan are tackling food insecurity on campus through an initiative called Project Roots. The program repurposes food waste to increase students’ access to affordable and healthy meal options.

Similarly, students at Brandon University are increasing food security in the city of Brandon through Green Futures. The community garden project, run by students and volunteers, provides fresh produce to local food banks and food box programs.

Thanks to these initiatives, Enactus University of British Columbia – Okanagan and Enactus Brandon University have been named 2018 Scotiabank EcoLiving Green Challenge Regional Champions. The teams were picked by Canada’s largest experiential learning platform, Enactus Canada, and program supporter Scotiabank.

Unlikely Allies Are Crowdsourcing Funding and Habitat to Save the Monarch Butterfly

The Monarch Butterfly Habitat Exchange is an innovative market-based program dedicated to restoring and conserving high-quality monarch habitat on America's private working lands. It’s been dubbed an ‘Airbnb for butterflies’ because it’s the only program of its kind that can open the vast untapped potential of large-scale farms and ranches to make habitat available for monarchs at an unprecedented scale and pace.

Smithfield Foods, a global food company that is also the world’s largest hog producer and pork processor, is the first food company to participate in the program, contributing $300,000 to restore key prairie habitat for monarchs in Missouri.

Jason F. McLennan: The Best Kind of Troublemaker

Jason F. McLennan, partner and CEO of McLennan Design and founder of the International Living Future Institute, has been dubbed a “troublemaker”—but in the best way possible. His work uncovered the importance of sustainability before it was a buzzword and movement in the design industry. Starting his career as an architect, McLennan said he was focused on sustainability from the start of his path, focusing on its importance “before it was cool.”

How One Farm is Harnessing Waste to Improve Soil Health and Put the Best Mushrooms on Your Pizza

When you take a bite of a hot slice of California Pizza Kitchen’s Mushroom and Green Onion pizza, you’re surely not thinking of mushroom farms, organic soil and sustainability.

Next time, perhaps you will.

What you might not know is that those mushrooms, and the farmers who grow them at the Pennsylvania-based Mother Earth Organic Mushrooms, are part of an awesome cycle of care that supports organic farms throughout the East Coast. Nestlé values the farm’s high-quality mushrooms, their rich flavor and the nutritional boost they provide — but we also seek out partners like Mother Earth to create shared value that goes beyond the products we create.

Environment Scores Big Win With Zero-Waste(i) Legacy Project at Super Bowl LII

The NFL, in partnership with PepsiCo, Aramark, U.S. Bank Stadium, SMG and the Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority, scored a zero-waste legacy project at Super Bowl LII, with 91 percent of all trash generated on gameday from 67,612 fans responsibly recovered through composting, recycling and reuse. The landmark project marks the highest diversion rate achieved at U.S. Bank Stadium and at any previous Super Bowl, and aims to serve as the benchmark for future large-scale events.

The results are in following the big game: nearly 63 tons of the 69 tons of gameday waste were recovered through recycling or donation for reuse (62 percent) and composting (29 percent).
