Spirit companies have joined the fight, stating that there’s no place for plastics in cocktails. Bacardi launched its No Straw campaign in 2016, estimated to eliminate one million straws a year.
Tetra Pak aims to launch a paper straw that is suitable for its portion-sized carton packages before the end of the year, as part of a broader programme to help address the issue of plastic straw waste.
Straws play an integral functional role on portion packages, but if not properly disposed of, they then become part of the plastics waste problem. The company has been working to encourage consumers to push straws “back in the pack” once empty, so they can be collected along with the rest of the package. Now, work is under way to develop a paper straw that is suitable for use on its portion-size carton packages.
While we’re all winners when sustainability becomes the norm, Bacardi announced its internal winners of its 4th Annual Bacardi Good Spirited awards. From upcycled glassware in Australia to engineering feats in Puerto Rico, and continued efforts to popularize the Bacardi No Straws campaign, among other initiatives, the winners produced considerable achievements for the environment, brand recognition, and savings.

Gill, who has been with the company for just over 30 years, heads up environmental and sustainability efforts there. He says that Smithfield has partnered with the University of Minnesota and the Environmental Defense Fund to develop a science-based approach for reducing emissions.

Several cities in California now have “straw-on-request” laws that prohibit waiters from handing out straws unless a diner expressly asks for one.
