Tyson Foods’ Workforce Education Initiative Continues to Expand

Tyson Foods’ Upward Academy, an in-plant education program that provides classes at no cost, recently surpassed 100,000 hours of instruction to more than 1,000 of the company’s team members.

Upward Academy launched in 2016 at one of the company’s plants in Springdale, Arkansas, and is now offered in 27 facilities in Arkansas, Missouri, Texas and North Carolina. Forty plants are projected to offer the program by the end of September 2018, and expansion will continue over the next several years to cover the company’s entire footprint.

The Knitting Factor: Making Skills-Based Volunteering Stick

What has emerged from nearly twenty years of practice is something Common Impact calls the “The Knitting Factor”, coined in our recent Stanford Social Innovation Review article, “The Promise of Skills-Based Volunteering. The Knitting Factor brings together three key conditions that enable skills-based engagements between the private and nonprofit sectors to create strengthened, sustainable solutions that don’t come undone when partners part ways.

Impact at Work: New Hope Housing Project Spotlight

Today we’re highlighting a project with a talented team of volunteers from JPMorgan Chase and its nonprofit partner, New Hope Housing, Inc., whose mission is to provide low-income vulnerable families and individuals high-quality affordable housing and the tools to build a better life. In 2016, Common Impact paired New Hope Housing with a team of HR professionals from JPMorgan Chase in Houston, TX to review and enhance their current employee performance review process to improve greater consistency in deployment.

KFC Foundation Offers New Personal Finance Program, MyChange, to KFC U.S. Restaurant Employees

The KFC Foundation, an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization funded by KFC franchisees, announced personal finance program, MyChange, as its newest charitable offering for employees at participating KFC U.S. restaurants. Offered in partnership with Sum180, MyChange fosters personalized financial wellness and teaches foundational personal finance skills to KFC’s restaurant employees who choose to enroll in the program.

Atlas Copco Donates Brewing Equipment to Colorado State University's Fermentation Science and Technology Program

Atlas Copco, a leading provider of sustainable productivity solutions, recently donated new brewing equipment to support Colorado State University’s (CSU) Fermentation Science and Technology Degree Program. The oil-free air compressors, nitrogen generator, receiving tanks, electronic water drains and air filters will be used to keep the University’s campus brewery running efficiently and support research that requires specific anaerobic environments.

Freeport-McMoRan Invests in Women’s Economic Empowerment Programs

PT Freeport Indonesia, a Freeport-McMoRan company, has an extensive Community Economic Development program. In cooperation with Bank BRI, the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises program supports income-generating activities for indigenous Papuan entrepreneurs.

Smithfield Foods and the Global Good Fund Announce Custom Leadership Development Program for Veteran Entrepreneurs

The Smithfield Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Smithfield Foods, Inc., and The Global Good Fund, are pleased to announce their partnership to launch the Veterans Leadership Program. The Global Good Fund, a leadership development enterprise built by and for social entrepreneurs, will identify six veteran entrepreneurs to take part in an eight-month program focused on creating sustainable jobs and supporting job search and placement for underemployed and unemployed veterans.

Our Leaders Take Time to Inspire Young Minds

On March 20, the Melville Hub was buzzing with young women seeking leadership skills advice from our own leaders. The day’s activities were designed to inspire the next generation of empowered women. Fifty-four 10th, 11th and 12th graders from New Hyde Park, Connetquot and Sewanhaka high schools attended the Young Women’s Leadership conference that we co-hosted with Junior Achievement.

Cerro Negro Local Entrepreneurs Contest

In late 2017, Goldcorp’s Cerro Negro mine in Perito Moreno, Argentina, helped develop a “Local Entrepreneurs Contest” together with Fundación Iniciativa and the city hall.

A workshop on business ventures launched the contest and provided the participants with the opportunity to acquire tools to further develop their new ventures. They were offered training and financing.

The month-long contest received a total of twenty-three applications, from which eight winners were selected. The assessment criteria included innovation of the products or services offered, management experience, sustainability considerations in areas such as social and environmental impact, safety, and return on investment potential.
