Stanley Black & Decker and Discovery Education today named two Innovation Generation Contest Grand Prize Winners, including William Davies Middle School of Mays Landing, New Jersey and St. Mary School of Bellevue, Nebraska. Both schools have been awarded $25,000 to create Stanley Black & Decker Makerspaces in their learning communities. The contest is part of the Innovation Generation: Making an Impact program, which aspires to engage 6th – 8th grade educators and students through innovation and the power of making.

Gardens at schools create positive learning environments, increase students’ willingness to try new fruits and vegetables, and serve as a valuable tool for engaging young learners in a number of academic subjects. The Smithfield Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Smithfield Foods, Inc., announced today a $350,000 donation to FUSE Studios, a high-quality and results-driven educational program piloted through Northwestern University that aims to transform science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) learning in schools across America. Smithfield’s substantial contribution to FUSE is part of the company’s recently announced charitable grant program that aims to address the unique needs of Smithfield’s local communities. The company’s donation will support 20 new FUSE Studios in participating school districts throughout the Midwest and North Carolina beginning in Fall 2020.

PNC strives to inspire learning and STEAM programs within our community. Pittsburgh high school students joined PNC’s Young Innovators: Code for Your Cause. These talented students were tasked with designing & developing innovative solutions in response to challenge statements with the help of PNC mentors.

In Houston, students from 88 schools in Texas and Florida and several from Spain competed across 253 teams, more than a third of which have participated in previous CodeWars. This is the third year winners from Barcelona were invited to compete in Houston. “HP has really helped the kids push themselves, to solve bigger problems and to learn more,” says Barcelona team coach Albert Falgueras Xarbau.

Hannah is one of 30 high school seniors selected from among 722 applicants to be awarded an Edison Scholars scholarship this year. To qualify, the recipients must live in SCE’s service area, have at least a cumulative 3.0 GPA, show financial need and plan to pursue studies in the fields of science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) at a four-year accredited college or university.
