Community Involvement

Zachary Dearing was living with his father on a houseboat in Rockport, Texas, when Hurricane Harvey hit. After his father evacuated to Houston, Zachary sought cover at the Live Oaks Learning Center. Upon his arrival at the city-designated shelter, he found that there was no one in charge to help evacuees or even to distribute supplies. With a team of volunteers, he helped more than 200 shelter occupants make it through the night, and worked with local law enforcement agencies to organize evacuation to Austin.

The Ingersoll Rand crisis response team has now made contact with all Ingersoll Rand employees and all of its contractors in Puerto Rico. While the devastation that Hurricane Maria left in her path has impacted the entire island of Puerto Rico, the resolve and positivity portrayed by the people is amazing.

We sincerely thank all employees for their support of Shire’s 2017 Global Day of Service. With your involvement we were able to surpass all of our previous years’ participation rates.

As Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico face the aftermath of Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria, Points of Light is honoring everyday citizens who stepped up to serve their communities during the immediate response and to embark on the long road to recovery.

For the second year in a row, employees from Arrow Electronics’ Venlo office volunteered with the Maria Auxiliatrix Run (M.A.-Run), a weekend of festivities supporting individuals with disabilities.

Over the next two years, with the support of a $600,000 grant from GSK, 120 young people will join the YLC and improve their health by focusing on nutrition and physical activity, emotional well-being, community safety and sexual health.

Common Impact, a nonprofit that pioneered corporate skills-based volunteering, teams up with Charles Schwab to launch their 4th annual Pro Bono Challenge, a skills-based flash consulting event where Schwab employees utilize their talents and expertise to support local nonprofit organizations in building capacity to serve the community.

As part of Xylem Watermark’s second annual Global Month of Service, a group of volunteers from Xylem’s headquarters in Rye Brook, NY visited St. Cassian School in Montclair, NJ to help educate students about the importance of clean water.

Sue Stephenson, Interim CEO and Executive Committee Vice Chair of IMPACT2030, will speak to "Why the SDGs are an Opportunity to Engage Employees" at the upcoming Toronto conference Inside Out: A Transformative Approach to Community Investment.

Inside Out is a future-looking conference designed to advance the practice of how companies invest in community.

This week, Comcast NBCUniversal is launching our annual Employee Giving Campaign for United Way and I am grateful to be part of it. Comcast has been partnering with United Way since shortly after the company’s founding more than 50 years ago, and our relationship continues to strengthen our local communities with each passing year. Last year, money pledged by our employees across our company helped fund over 5,000 nonprofits in more than 1,300 local communities. In Denver, that meant providing mentoring to over 1,000 young people; in Atlanta, it meant assisting 75 mothers with housing and financial coaching; and in Washington, D.C., that funding provided medical supplies to over 2,500 people in need.
