A (Healthy) Shot Through the Heart!

I wouldn’t call myself a HUGE Bon Jovi fan, but when thinking about February, a.k.a. heart health month, and public opinion, all that comes to mind is “You give FATS a bad name!” I am a child from the 1980’s and love some good Rock n’ Roll. I also grew up on the idea that fat in food was bad. The food industry used this trend to start producing many low fat or fat free products and replaced the fat with sugar or carbohydrates. Unfortunately, I think this perception continues to invade the minds of those outside health-related or nutrition fields.

Smithfield’s contribution was part of the company’s 2018 Helping Hungry Homes® donation tour. Now in the program’s 10th year, Helping Hungry Homes® is Smithfield’s signature hunger-relief initiative focused on alleviating hunger and helping Americans become more food secure. Mindful Portions: Cutting Through the Quantity Confusion with Quality Meal Guidance

People around the world are more attentive than ever about food and nutrition, questioning where and how their food is made and its impact on health. While many of us are trying to eat healthily, we’re faced with the difficult task of navigating an environment that consistently promotes food quantity over food quality.

Our Food Journey™

Our belief is that good business and good stewardship go hand in hand.

Given our role in helping to feed America and the world for over 125 years, we know that building social value and creating economic value are not competing goals. For us, there is no daylight between good citizenship and good business.

While we are committed to many worthy causes, including cancer research and fighting childhood hunger, it is our core business – efficiently producing delicious food for the world’s growing population – that we are most proud of. Since the beginning, we’ve believed that social responsibility is more than giving a percentage of our profits at the end of the year.

Food Fortification Matters

Imagine if people talked about solving undernutrition just as much as we all talk about obesity. Throughout the world, two billion people do not get enough micronutrients like iron and vitamin A. It’s a serious problem, especially in the developing world, and can have long-term health effects.

Although progress has been made worldwide to reduce micronutrient deficiencies, there is still some way to go to further reduce undernutrition and eventually eliminate it.
