I had every intention of this post being a continuance of my thoughts on Laudato Si and what Pope Francis means to the environmental community. But then Friday happened and I had to write something else.

Top 2016 Sustainability Conferences in the US

We’ve put together a short list of some of the top US conferences for aspiring or current CSR professions to serve as a starting point.

MGM Resorts Presents 34th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade Themed “Living the Dream: The Movement Continues”

The Las Vegas celebration being held on Jan. 18, 2016 is hailed as one of the nation's most popular annual parades celebrating the ideals and life of Dr. King, thousands are expected to line the Fourth Street parade route to commemorate Dr. King's legacy of promoting equal and human rights. The theme for this year’s parade is “Living the Dream: The Movement Continues.”

TerraPass Brings Green to the College Football Playoff National Championship

Top-ranked Clemson and No.2 Alabama will be facing off amidst more than orange and crimson at the College Football Playoff National Championship. TerraPass, a member of the Just Energy Group of companies will be greening up the game with carbon offsets and renewable energy credits (RECs); mitigating the game’s environmental impact. Playoff Fan Central, the CFP transportation fleet and competing teams’ travel and accommodations will be “carbon neutral” thanks to offsets provided by Terrapass.

11th Annual CECP Board of Boards Convening of CEOs

Fifty CEOs of the world’s largest companies will convene at CECP’s 11th annual Board of Boards: Competing for the Long Run, February 29, 2016 in New York, NY. A Forbes-named top three “power player” event for CEOs, the Board of Boards is a closed-door, CEO-to-CEO forum on the case for thinking long-term about business and societal strategies.

DC Metro Nonprofits Gain $150,000 in Pro Bono Services from Taproot Foundation and Project Management for Change on MLK Day

As part of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. National Day of Service, Taproot Foundation and Project Management for Change will lead the second annual Project Management Day of Service Pro Bono Lab. This pro bono volunteer event will bring critical resources in strategic planning, marketing, IT, finance, and HR to local nonprofit organizations. Facilitated by the Taproot Foundation and Project Management for Change, in partnership with 5 local Project Management Institute (PMI) chapters, this one-day event will connect over 300 seasoned project managers and subject matter experts with 100 nonprofit organizations.

Corporate sustainability goals can be something of a mystery. I am sometimes asked: why do companies set the sustainability goals that they do? I often answer that as a science company, DuPont focuses on developing science-based solutions to market problems. But for any company --- not just DuPont --- setting corporate sustainability goals is as much art as it is science. Developing the right goal means balancing the (not mutually exclusive) needs to grow the business, demonstrate shareholder value, incorporate oft-competing inputs of stakeholders, and contribute our fair share to protect the planet.
