Cindy Wallis-Lage, President of Black & Veatch’s water business, discusses the importance of industry collaboration for more sustainable water systems.
Like other unconscionable and unfathomable acts of the early 21st century—a period of historic great change already—Trump’s pulling out of the Paris Climate Agreement has sent me searching for the deeper meaning of it all, while the pundits flail away.
Last year, PepsiCo announced an ambitious set of goals as it redoubled its commitment to Performance with Purpose—the fundamental belief that business success is inextricably linked to the sustainability of the world we share. One key element of this agenda is the company’s goal to cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by at least 20 percent across its value chain by 2030.
The long-term goal of The Ray is to build the world’s first sustainable road, a highway that could create its own clean, renewable energy and generate income by selling power to utility companies, while producing no stormwater runoff or other pollution and eliminating traffic deaths.
JetBlue isn’t afraid to make the first move – in 2015, we were the first commercial airline to join the American Business Act on Climate Pledge in support of the Conference of Parties (COP 21), the "Paris Climate Conference." However, it’s industry-wide collaboration that’s going to get us there.
General Mills has taken another step toward its climate goal with the signing of a virtual 15-year power purchase agreement with Renewable Energy Systems (RES) for 100-megawatts (MW) of its Cactus Flats wind project. The wind project will produce renewable energy credits for General Mills that can be applied toward the company’s greenhouse gas emission reduction goals. During the peak of construction, the project will create about 250 jobs in the clean energy workforce.
Alliance Data, and Texas Trees Foundation, in conjunction with American Forests, the oldest national conservation organization in the United States, teamed up to implement the urban heat island study in Dallas County, which identifies where the region is experiencing high urban heat island temperatures and the associated effect on air quality, and where greater tree canopy coverage could mitigate the issue.
With the announcement that the US will withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement, I wanted to reiterate VMware’s absolute commitment to operating our business in a responsible and sustainable manner. From our commitment to green building practices around the world to the order of magnitude our technology delivers in terms of energy and carbon emission reductions in IT, VMware has been on the leading edge of positive environmental impact since our inception.
The Georgia Tech Scheller College of Business is creating the next leaders to take on carbon reduction through an innovative co-curricular initiative launched in partnership with the College of Sciences and partially funded by the Ray C. Anderson Foundation.
Customer education, infrastructure modernization and the use of data analytics will be key tools to overcoming the water industry’s perennial challenges posed by aging infrastructure, according to Black & Veatch's 2017 Strategic Directions: Water Industry Report. A combination of investment and new business process approaches will also be critical to closing the gap between costs and consumer expectation.
