For the past month Kenya has had torrential rainfall. This followed devastating droughts in parts of the country. The Conversation Africa’s Moina Spooner asked Maimbo Malesu how the country can make better use of the rains.

Agroforestry Gives Kenyan Indigenous Community a Lifeline

The Cherangani people, an indigenous community in Kenya’s Rift Valley, have always called the Cherangani Hills Forest their ancestral home.
Also known locally as the Sengwer, they were traditionally reliant on the forest for hunting and gathering, herbal medicines, honey, and sorghum and millet farming. Then the colonial government evicted them from the forest, only permitting them access to medicinal plants; gathering and hunting in the forest is still prohibited.

Agroforestry Concessions Are a Strategic Mechanism for Smallholders in the Amazon. How Do We Make It Work?

Despite Peru’s ambitious commitment to reduce deforestation and emissions derived from the LULUCF sector, advances in the design and implementation of governance tools and strategies to revert land use change trajectories at the deforestation frontiers are still lacking.

'Mountain Futures 2018' Launches Major New Centre for Mountain Research

Researchers and representatives from governments, mountain communities and private sector companies from across the globe met on June 4th to launch a major new centre for mountain research. The four-day Mountain Futures 2018 conference, organized by the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) and Kunming Institute of Botany (KIB), Chinese Academy of Sciences includes a visit to the new 200-hectare site in China’s Yunnan Province dedicated to developing innovative farming systems that tackle poverty and environmental degradation in the world’s mountain areas.

A Feast for Iguanas

The green iguana population there has dwindled significantly. Population growth, illegal hunting, and the mismanagement of resources – the environment’s usual enemies – had conspired to reduce their numbers to frightening levels. Thankfully, the people at Monsanto’s Research and Development site in Salama, a city in north-central Guatemala, helped come to the rescue in their community.

Food & Ag Sector – Sustainability Is in Focus From Farm-to-Table As Companies Make Progress / Stakeholders Say “More”

Hey, a Cuppa Joe – the morning treat for many people around the world. That first hot cup of dark coffee can set the tone for us for the day. And when our spirits (and energy) may lag, the cuppa joe can perk us up again for a while at any time of day. But – how many of us give thought to how that wonderful dark liquid arrived in our grocery stores, at the local Starbucks or Dunkin’ Donuts or other coffee counters? The Ecologist took a close look at the business of coffee recently and their commentary (and report on the industry) is our Top Story for you this week.

How Data Is Driving Sustainability for Farmers

The data revolution is helping us all make better decisions and farmers are no exception. In the same way that we trust fitness trackers to encourage us to exercise more, watch what we eat and get enough sleep, digital agriculture continues to take root and gain wider acceptance with farmers. In fact, digital apps on smartphones and tablets are helping farmers to collect, store and visualize critical field data so they can make the best decisions throughout the year.

Uganda Will Use Trees on Farms to Meet National Biodiversity Targets

Expansion of agriculture is one of the main drivers of global deforestation and loss of habitat.
