The Future of Household Energy in Emerging Markets Will Be Safe, Convenient and Online
How did you cook your breakfast this morning? If you’re one of the roughly 3 billion people worldwide who live in energy poverty, it was over an open fire or a pile of lit charcoal inside a rudimentary stove. Cooking this way is inefficient, wasting up to 90% of the heat from combustion. It is also dangerous, affecting vision, causing heart and lung disease and ultimately shortened lives. Almost half the world’s population still cooks this way because they need to eat and don’t have other options, but thankfully progress is being made.
Fostering Student Interest and Inclusion to Close the STEM Gap
For a country that has historically thrived on innovation, the United States may now be losing out on generations of innovators in science, mathematics, technology, and engineering. These innovators are essential to bridging the skills gap in STEM: an estimated 3 million STEM jobs in America are unfilled because there are not enough qualified workers to fill them.
Book Excerpt: Waging Justice
From the devastating wildfires racing through northern California to the hurricanes that slammed into Puerto Rico and Texas to daily challenges to democracy, we are constantly reminded we are living in a time of major environmental, social, and geopolitical upheaval. As a doctor, activist, advocate for global justice, and now a storyteller, Dr. Paul Zeitz offers a clear vision for the future in his debut memoir.
Recycling Simplified
In households across America, questions like these are heard several times a day: “Is this recyclable?” “It’s okay to put my recyclables in a bag, right?” “Do I need to do anything to this pizza box before I recycle it?”

Recycling started as a relatively easy concept — converting discarded resources into reusable material. But, over time, two things happened — the way manufacturers package their products changed and community recycling guidelines became disparate and confusing. Today, people are genuinely unsure about what to recycle, what not to recycle and how to recycle. The one constant in this equation — people want to recycle.
Landfill Solutions
People use multiple adjectives when describing a landfill, and they’re usually not anything related to “community asset.” At Republic, we’re working to change that perception. We want everyone to know that landfills play a fundamental role in protecting our planet and helping communities grow, revitalize and prosper.
Go Get the (Immune Cell) Regulators!
The shortage of donor beta cells and the need for strong immunosuppressive drugs to prevent immune attack make beta cell replacement available only to people with severe life-threatening unawareness of their low blood sugar, called hypoglycemia. At JDRF, we are taking a new route to beta cell replacement technologies, with the aim to develop an unlimited source of insulin-producing cells without drugs that limit your immune system’s role in fighting off infection.

One avenue, which Shugo Sasaki, M.D., Ph.D., is pursuing with a postdoctoral fellowship from JDRF, is to use gene editing. More specifically, Dr. Sasaki wants to investigate beta cells that have been edited to make a molecule that attracts “good” immune cells, called regulatory T cells, and whether the transplanted beta cells ar
Running a Clean Fleet
Running a clean fleet means reducing our footprint. It requires a tremendous amount of technology, commitment and vision — all of which we have relied on to expand our fleet of clean-powered collection vehicles.

College Is the Goal. How Peninsula Bridge Empowers Kids to Get There.
As a high school senior in California last year, Jose knew his Dad was excited about his college application process – even if he didn’t have much experience with how it all worked. Jose has been aiming for a degree in computer sciences—a big goal, since nobody in his family has ever graduated from college. But since he was young, Jose has had a unique support system through the California-based organization, and Dell Youth Learning partner, Peninsula Bridge.
