Amgen Scholars Program

Made possible through a 12-year, $50 million commitment from the Amgen Foundation, Amgen Scholars allows undergraduates from across the globe to participate in cutting-edge research opportunities at world-class institutions. 17 leading institutions across the U.S., Europe and Japan currently host the summer program.

Undergraduate participants benefit from undertaking a research project under top faculty, being part of a cohort-based experience of seminars and networking events, and taking part in a symposium in their respective region (U.S., Europe or Japan) where they meet their peers, learn about biotechnology, and hear from leading scientists.

Amgen Scholars Alumni Wants to Mentor Underrepresented Undergrads Interested in STEM
"Ultimately, I aspire to become a principal investigator (PI) with my own lab crewed by brilliantly blossoming scientists. As of now, I am fascinated by neuroimmunology and the role of neuroinflammation in neurodegenerative diseases."

An Amgen Scholars Journey From Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México to the University of Tokyo
When I was a high school student, I took a serious interest in biology and chemistry, and I always asked my teachers: "But how did they find that out?" This was my first approach to scientific discovery and, from there on, I made the decision to get a science-related degree. Upon my entry to university, I started to work on basic science research projects, however I realized that I wanted to do research that would have an actual impact in human health and disease.

Policy Pursuits Take Two Amgen Scholars Beyond the Lab
When Cameron Clarke was first assigned a policy brief as an Amgen Scholar at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 2016, it was the start of something big: a career in public health policy. In the year that followed, he would use the policy brief writing skills again and again as an intern on Capitol Hill, and then with several local government organizations on issues ranging from opioid addiction and minority health inequities to environmental policy. Now a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford, Clarke’s work focuses on systematically reviewing research to translate the results into policy recommendations.

Six Amgen Scholars Share What They Love About Science
In July, at the U.S. symposium, six Amgen Scholars shared what they love about science. From the power of energy to the magic of molecules, these students share their unique perspectives on what drives their research.

Meet Amgen Scholars Alumni Nguyen Thu Trang from Nam Dinh, Vietnam
My goal is to pursue a career in clinical and translational research, for which I believe the experiences, knowledge, and advice from the Amgen Scholars Program would help me prepare.

Amgen Scholars Alumni Hlib Razumkov Traveled From University of Toronto to University of Tokyo to Conduct Research
My interest in science was ignited by my chemistry teachers and the spirit of the Science Olympiad. In my middle school, there were student subject competitions on different levels ranging from regional to international. By coincidence, my chemistry teacher was a key figure in the Ukrainian Olympiad movement. She introduced me to this entirely new world – full of studying advanced and fascinating concepts, the spirit of competition, and many bright personalities.

Undergraduate Hiroki Fukuda Shares His Amgen Scholars Experience
When I was a child, my father often took me to the great outdoors, such as the sea and the forest, to go fishing, bird-watching, and so on. It really got me interested in nature. When I finally entered high school, I was first exposed to the studies of physics and chemistry. I realized at that moment that if I studied the sciences more, I would be able to deepen my knowledge of nature. That was the catalyst for my interest in science.

Buddies for Life: Easing the Transition to UCLA
Melissa Song was born in China but moved to California when she was 5 years old and stayed in the area for college at UCLA to pursue neuroscience. Hannah Pearce was born and raised in Houston, also staying in her home state for college, at Texas A&M to pursue bioengineering. But the summer before her senior year, Hannah would go to UCLA for her Amgen Scholars research, meeting up with resident-expert Melissa. Their pairing has led to a lifelong friendship and is a defining characteristic of the Amgen Scholars Program for many participants.

Connecting with My Cohort: the Best Part of My Amgen Scholars Experience
When I was first asked to blog about the most valuable part of the Amgen Scholars Program for me this past summer, I had no idea how to respond. How could I choose from the many great opportunities I had been given? Maybe I should talk about being able to experience life as a graduate student working full time in a lab.

Learning to Thrive in a New Environment: the Perspective From Cambridge
On a surprisingly sunny Sunday afternoon, 21 students from 17 different countries all arrived in Cambridge. Each of us came from a unique background, armed with distinctive outlooks on life, but we all shared the same unequivocal curiosity and passion that science demands. The earlier arrivals amongst us (including me) formed a welcome party for those yet to come, taking the time to introduce ourselves.
