Amgen Scholars Program

Made possible through a 12-year, $50 million commitment from the Amgen Foundation, Amgen Scholars allows undergraduates from across the globe to participate in cutting-edge research opportunities at world-class institutions. 17 leading institutions across the U.S., Europe and Japan currently host the summer program.

Undergraduate participants benefit from undertaking a research project under top faculty, being part of a cohort-based experience of seminars and networking events, and taking part in a symposium in their respective region (U.S., Europe or Japan) where they meet their peers, learn about biotechnology, and hear from leading scientists.

Big Impact in Bio: Building Communities
In this video, Amgen Scholars alumni tell their #BigImpactinBio stories, focusing on the importance of community building in science. Rachel Lucero (ASP 2014, University of California, San Diego) is a STEM teacher at the Dunbar School in Washington, D.C.; Marta Andrés Terré, Ph.D. (ASP 2010, Karolinska Institutet) is a scientist at the Bain & Company; Joshua Yang (ASP 2013, University of California, San Diego) is co-founder of Helispot and an M.D./Ph.D. student at Johns Hopkins University; and Stylianos Serghiou, M.D. (ASP 2010, University of Cambridge) is a Ph.D student at Stanford University.

Big Impact in Bio: Identifying Biosignals to Improve Women’s Health
From an early age, Suzanne Rohrback had a unique insight into the need for science to bridge gaps in medical care. Her big brother is autistic and growing up, Rohrback remembers thinking there were no good options for him – unmedicated, he could be unpredictably violent and medicated, he would be zombie-like. “But we don’t understand enough about what goes wrong in this condition to have created a better solution,” she says.

Big Impact in Bio: Creatively Engineering Tissue Solutions
The word “creativity” may not be traditionally associated with scientific research, but for Elisa D’Arcangelo, it sums up some of the aspects she most values about being a biomedical engineer. As a tissue engineer, she must come up with creative solutions for growing tissue in the lab that can help shape new therapies for cancer and other diseases.

Big Impact in Bio: Funding the Translation From Bench to Bedside at the American Academy
At a meeting of the American Academy of Neurology last year, Megan Krench saw something remarkable: Children, previously unable to move their head or sit up, were turning their heads to look at their parents, sitting up, and even walking. It was a video of a company’s clinical trial for a gene therapy to treat a devastating childhood neuromuscular disorder, spinal muscular atrophy. Infants with this disease typically never reach any developmental milestones, and most die by age two.

Big Impact in Bio: Developing Nanomedicine and Mentoring Young Scientists the World-Over
When Bronwyn Scott received a Stamps Scholarship a couple years ago, she cited an Amgen Scholar as the person having the greatest impact on her in her college career: “My incredible research mentor Dr. Joy Wolfram had inspired me to work hard, believe in myself, and remain unapologetic for my passion and drive. She continuously pushes me to reach for goals I thought were unattainable.”

Seize the Moment, Steel Yourself Against Rejection, and Connect: A Professor-Parent’s Advice
Steven McCornack is an unlikely member of the Amgen Scholars community. He is not a biology researcher, undergraduate, program alumnus, or student program director. A professor of communications at the University of Alabama Birmingham (UAB), McCornack studies interpersonal relationships. He has recommended students before for the Amgen Scholars Program but his true connection to the program is a very recent and personal one: his son was a 2017 Amgen Scholar.

Real Life Research Experience: Meet Amgen Scholars Alumni Agata Misiaszek
Ever since I can remember, I was curious about how the world works and the causes and implications of different processes. Life’s extremely complex network of molecules and reactions that made me want to contribute to its understanding, especially because it has a constant impact on us. I find the ability to understand and possibly modify the entire network by interacting with a single component on molecular level incredibly fascinating. The application of research in disease treatment and improvement of overall life quality makes me realize the importance of the area and drives me to invest even more into my studies.
