2018 Michael Weiner Scholarship for Labor Studies Application Now Available
NEW YORK, September 6, 2017 /3BL Media/ - The Major League Baseball Players Trust today announced that the 2018 Michael Weiner Scholarship for Labor Studies application is now available for submission through Monday, November 13, 2017.
In July of 2014, Major League baseball players, through the Major League Baseball Players Trust, created this scholarship program to honor the life of former MLBPA Executive Director, Michael Weiner. The scholarship seeks to recognize and support the efforts of individuals dedicated to improving the lives of workers. The Players Trust awards up to five $10,000 scholarships annually as part of the scholarship program.
In its first three years, more than 150 applications from over 100 colleges and universities were received; and there have been 15 Michael Weiner Scholarship for Labor Studies recipients representing such schools as Berkeley School of Law, Columbia Law School, Cornell University, CUNY School of Law, Fordham University School of Law, Howard University School of Law, Northeastern University School of Law, Northwestern University, UCLA School of Law, UMass Amherst, University of Missouri School of Law and University of Texas School of Law.
Weiner spent 25 years, nearly his entire professional career, with the MLBPA working in support of the Players – past, present and future. Despite being diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor in August of 2012, Weiner waged an inspiring battle against his disease as he continued to work on behalf of the Players right up to the time of his passing in November 2013, at the age of 51.
