A black baby in the U.S. is more than twice as likely to die before its first birthday as a white baby. In addition to the medical care and access a woman and baby receive, these poor outcomes are also driven by social determinants of health—non-clinical factors such as social, educational, environmental, and economic opportunities that affect a woman’s overall health and wellbeing. In an effort to increase collaboration and transparency, our Éléonore operation formally established a site-based grievance mechanism in 2016 using the principles set out in our Sustainability Excellence Management System (SEMS). Through discussions with our Cree Nation of Wemindji partners, a joint decision was made to refer to it as a “dialogue mechanism,” with the intent of facilitating meaningful conversations with our stakeholders. In 2017, Éléonore volunteered to pilot a new internal tool developed by the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) team to assess the effectiveness of the dialogue mechanism.

Novartis reaffirms its commitment to the fight against liver fluke (fascioliasis), signing a renewed memorandum of understanding with the World Health Organization (WHO) to extend its drug donation for Egaten® (triclabendazole) until 2022. Egaten is currently the only treatment for fascioliasis recommended by the WHO and is on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines.

This July, a group of summer interns at Arrow Electronics participated in a day of volunteer work at Gray’s and Torrey’s peaks in Colorado, taking service initiatives to an elevation of 12,000 feet. Throughout the day, they performed trail maintenance, guided by leaders from the Colorado Fourteeners Initiative (CFI).

During CIT Cares Month, more than 250 community projects were completed by 1,900 CIT volunteers over 7,300 hours across 18 locations to make a difference. These efforts included packing & delivering over 130,000 lbs of food, planting 1,300 lbs of vegetables, and cleaning parks and beaches across the country.
