For Saira Sakalaš, learning she was selected as an Amgen Scholar last year was the beginning of a new chapter in her life. She says she will never forget the moment she got an email from the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden offering her the fellowship.

In second grade, when asked what he wanted to be when he grew up, Timothy Day said: “a chemist who would try to cure cancer.” He wasn’t too far off the mark. Two decades later, with biochemistry, microbiology, and neuroscience degrees in hand, Amgen Scholar alumnus Day has started his own company to to develop gene therapies for intestinal and systemic diseases.

As a young child, Jonathan Reddix loved riding the merry-go-round at the zoo. While other riders waved to their parents and posed for pictures, he’d stare at the overhead gears and pulleys, trying to figure out what made the merry-go-round spin. He said his mother and grandmother laugh about those rides, and his early fascination with how things work. His family’s also proud that his studies resulted in top grades, scholarships and a strong interest in engineering.

The companies that are winning at attracting millennials are nailing it on culture and values. My own career path is a perfect example of this. I left a large mutual fund company in Boston to join a sustainable investing firm in New Hampshire because its focus on investing for both performance and impact resonated with me personally. At Impax, we have above-average representation of millennials on staff and on leadership teams, and that is a direct reflection of the fact that my generation wants to succeed at something we believe in.

Last November, ILFI CEO Amanda Sturgeon spoke at TEDMED 2018, the independent health and medicine edition of the world-famous TED conference, dedicated to “ideas worth spreading.” In her speech, Amanda talked about biophilic design, human health, and how the former can benefit the latter, as well as the role architecture can play in bringing nature back to our (mostly indoor) lives.

In addition to going on excursions via VR, students could check out powerful PCs, including OMEN by HP gaming laptops, desktops, accessories, HP Chromebooks and smart whiteboards. They also learned in immersive, hands-on workshops, including one where they had the chance to code their own drone flight path.

Since launching in 2012, HP LIFE has already reached over 744,000 people. Working in conjunction with other initiatives including HP World on Wheels and HP Learning Studios, and our international partnerships, it will continue to play a key role in our mission to bring quality learning and digital literacy to those who will benefit from it the very most.
