The region of Cajamarca, located in northern Peru, is home to many rural communities whose residents depend on agriculture. From May to October, the region sees little to no rainfall creating drought-like conditions impacting agricultural production and livestock grazing. This annual dry season also impacts life in the City of Cajamarca, where inadequate water infrastructure means many households only have access to running water for a few hours day.

To develop their case, the authors (three academics and a consultant) looked at Brazil's giant beef industry, a challenge for studying considering the size and complexity of the industry and its long-term impact on the planet.

As part of the Newmont water management strategy, regions are completing evaluations of their watershed to develop methodology that are in line with the ICMM guidelines on Catchment based water management for the mining and metals industry. Making young people more aware about protecting the sea and the Italian coastline is the idea behind the "Guardians of the Coast", the citizen science project promoted by Costa Crociere Foundation, which aims to create a long-term environmental snapshot of Italy's coastline, from Liguria to Friuli Venezia Giulia, as well as Sardinia and Sicily, with the active participation of teachers and students from over 200 Italian high schools.

Cerro Verde is located in an arid region of southwestern Peru, close to the city of Arequipa. Population growth, industrialization, and sewage contamination of the river Chili were increasing pressures on an already limited water supply. Recognizing this, Freeport-McMoRan worked with local stakeholders to co-finance a water treatment plant that takes contaminated water from the local river and makes it drinkable.

The Water Replenishment District of Southern California (WRD), selected Tetra Tech to design the Ground Water Reliability Improvement Project (GRIP). Tetra Tech used multiple technologies to treat secondary effluent to a near distilled water quality and re-inject into the groundwater basin.
