Environment: The Future Doesn’t Suck

In 2016, Bacardi led the drinks industry with the first “no straws” campaign focusing on eliminating single-use plastic straw from its cocktails. After much success driving change internally at Bacardi offices, brand homes and events, Bacardi joined forces with Lonely Whale, the award-winning non-profit dedicated to bringing forward courageous ideas that positively impact the health of our ocean, to help rid the environment of single-use plastic. Together, we’ve launched #TheFutureDoesntSuck program with a goal to eliminate one billion single-use plastic straws by 2020. In addition, Bacardi has committed to review its global supply chain, with the aim of removing non-essential, non-recyclable single-use plastic waste. Online conversations are a reflection of consumer behavior and that’s why Bacardi and Lonely Whale have issued a “cease and desip” message asking makers of emojis to remove straws from their designs. If you aren’t using single-use plastic straws in real life, then you shouldn’t use them on your social media.

You Can Change Your Workplace, Here Are Four Ways To Start
A company’s decision to remove plastic straws from their kitchen doesn’t just affect their kitchen, it encourages straw production companies to come up with more environmentally friendly options and it cuts down on the company’s own footprint. Bacardi, for instance, has committed to using its platform to impact change within its own company and outside of it. With the launch of its #TheFutureDoesntSuck campaign the company aims to remove one billion single-use plastic straws by 2020 through a personal commitment to ban plastic straws at any Bacardi sponsored event, as well as a larger promise to curb unnecessary use of plastic in its supply chains. The company has promised to use its platform to spark collaborations that will promote environmental efforts across all industries.

Working alongside BACARDÍ® rum, who has collaborated with the award-winning non-profit organisation Lonely Whale to secure commitments from bars, restaurants and venues in a goal to remove 50 million single-use plastic straws from London this summer by asking them to become 100% single-use plastic straw-free, expert forecaster Jacqui Ma has looked at trend developments throughout the decades and revealed which trends she believes will cease to exist in the future, such as the use of plastic straws, a fashion that only developed in the 1980’s.

Spirit companies have joined the fight, stating that there’s no place for plastics in cocktails. Bacardi launched its No Straw campaign in 2016, estimated to eliminate one million straws a year.

Could It Be the Last Straw for Plastic Straws?
We are now in the middle of a war on straws being fought by environmentalists as well as some bartenders and liquor companies (such as Bacardi, which banned plastic straws from events two years ago). Several cities in California now have “straw-on-request” laws that prohibit waiters from handing out straws unless a diner expressly asks for one.

The War on Straws Is Coming to a Bar Near You
Bacardi Ltd. cited the 500 million estimate when it became one of the first spirits makers to take a stand against plastic straws and swizzle sticks, banning them two years ago from its events. A Bacardi spokeswoman says the initiative spares more than 1 million straws a year.

The Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) has announced that it will be phasing out plastic straws across all its operations, and will be urging its members to do the same, following in the footsteps of Bacardi, Pernod Ricard and Diageo.
