My name is Jackson and I am an Action Team Captain at Brunswick High School in Maine.
At the end of October, our Action Team participated in a fall clean up at Peaks Island to help some wonderful women of the VOA Fay Garman Home prepare their garden for the harsh winter ahead.
At the home, two very kind women named Aviva and Janice taught us some basic gardening techniques so we could get right to work! Together, we raked up the yard, dug up all of the dahlia flowers to save them for the spring, trimmed the bushes, took out all the weeds and laid down straw.
Overall the experience was awesome. It was a beautiful day and all of the members of the nursing home were really appreciative of the work we did and rewarded us by making some delicious apple crisp.
This event was really special for our Action Team because it showed us how even the smallest acts of kindness can go a long way. We learned how important it is to get involved in our community through volunteering and what we can accomplish as a team if we all work together.
Our Action Team is very excited for our upcoming events and to return to Peaks Island to plant the dahlia’s in the spring!
