On a brisk Saturday morning in November, volunteers and area organizations in Austin, Minnesota, were busy getting everything ready for an event to help others in the community. Tables were being set up, groceries were being placed into bags and barber chairs were being brought in for haircuts.
Richard Lemons, co-chair of the Austin Poverty Taskforce, the organization that coordinated the event, said he was humbled and overwhelmed as he entered the high school gym where Austin’s first Community Connect event would be taking place. “I was moved by how many people cared and were giving their time to help out,” he said.
Shortly after joining Marina Bay Sands in June 2014, Seah Beng Tat, Senior Guest Service Agent, signed up for his first Sands for Singapore volunteer opportunity. He recalled the event, where Team Members assisted children with dyslexia, as a memorable and motivational experience. Since then, Beng Tat has been an avid volunteer with Sands for Singapore, participating in numerous events over the past three years and making him one of the top 10 volunteers for the community event. His efforts go beyond Marina Bay Sands – during his own free time, he also helps out with the elderly and handicapped.
Looking for a change, Jameel Milligan, age 36, moved from Philadelphia to Las Vegas. He was certain he’d have no problem finding a job at one of the many resorts. However, with certain permits taking over 19 weeks to obtain for most casino workers, Milligan found himself in a situation he didn’t expect – homeless and unable to work.
Beyond Philanthropy and Social Impact, supported by the BMW Foundation Herbert Quandt, conducted the study “Value² - Social Innovation for Business and Society” analyzing the potential of the so-called Base of the Pyramid (BOP) concept in Germany. Since 2007, more than 2,100 members of Aflac’s Columbus, Georgia, team have strapped on hardhats and tool belts with Habitat for Humanity. The program is so popular that Aflac holds lotteries to determine which employees will get the chance to participate. This year, 175 employees built Aflac’s 11th Habitat house, to the great delight of resident Marion Dantzler. Meanwhile, 50 employees at Aflac’s Columbia, South Carolina, location worked alongside new Habitat for Humanity homeowners during a five-day renovation project, completing the team’s second home construction.
On a weekly basis, Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth (NPHY) visits at-risk communities to host a street outreach event called ‘Feel Good Fridays.’ During the event, volunteers give back to young people who are in need of a helping hand. Las Vegas Sands, through our commitment to being a good corporate citizen in the communities in which we operate, is one of NPHY’s biggest supporters in the community through its corporate giving program Sands Cares, and together they are combating youth homelessness.
