Webinar: Activating the SDGs Into Business Operations

"Increasingly businesses are realising that small sustainable impacts are no longer enough. To meet the SDGs requires a wholesale shift in thinking and operations across both business and industry," says Candy Telani Anton, Head of Strategy Europe at Ethical Corporation. But how can companies go about integrating the SDGs into their own business operations?

Our Progress to Sustainably Source Wheat

Wheat is an important ingredient for General Mills. We use it in everything from cereal to pizza crust, cake mixes, cinnamon rolls and more. Making sure that the wheat we source is grown sustainably is a priority for us.

Nepal Makes Progress Towards a National Agroforestry Policy

The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) is assisting with the development of a national agroforestry policy for Nepal along with the Climate Technology Centre and Network. In November 2017, an inter-ministerial coordination committee, of which ICRAF is a facilitating member, organized a series of consultations on how the policy could tackle barriers restricting widespread adoption of agroforestry.

A Pick and a Spade May Triple Farmers’ Yields in the Kenyan Drylands

The female farmers of Makueni County in southeastern Kenya rarely expect to triumph over their parched, unpropitious soils. A pick, a spade and a jovial, no-nonsense, will-to-survive scarcely seem sufficient for a transition to greener prospects. In addition, the need for cash frequently robs these hardy women of their men’s presence; casual labour in economic hotspots, or other work in livestock and poultry trading, is the norm. Producing the food thus rests on the shoulders of the women, many of whom are subsistence farmers or smallholders burdened with increasingly unproductive land. Severe land degradation coupled with drastic changes in climate has meant that many frequently face food shortages.

Integrating Ecosystem Impact Assessment into Life Cycle Assessment

The world’s forests face multiple threats: climate change, agricultural conversion, urban encroachment, and intensifying wood harvesting used in construction and a variety of consumer products. Crucial to addressing this problem is understanding the causes of deforestation, and the severity of related ecosystem disturbance and threatened species losses. SCS' groundbreaking LCA study on behalf of Stella McCartney compared the environmental performance of ten different raw material sources of MMCF.

First Seriola Farms Certified to ASC Standard

The Standard, which establishes strict environmental and social requirements for farmed fish, is quickly gaining traction within the industry.

Sustaining Organic Food

Pesticides touch every aspect of our lives, from residues on our produce to increased chronic disease to biodiversity loss. Toxic compounds are used all over the world to the detriment of the environment and human lives. In a small village in Mexico, women are paying the ultimate price. The village of Venustiano Carranza is located in Chiapas, the southernmost Mexican state, which shares a border with Guatemala.

The Agricultural Models We Want Tomorrow

Food loss in the supply chain, the shift to a less-nutritious fast-food diet and wasteful irrigation techniques are among the most important challenges currently facing the food and agriculture system in the region. In Egypt, 2.5 million tonnes of wheat is lost per year mainly due to slow transit times. For fruits and vegetables, which have the highest proportion of losses and waste, estimated at 45 percent, country specific data indicates a substantial part (as high as 29 percent for fresh vegetables in Egypt) of these losses occur at the post-harvest stage. However, these losses between the grower and consumer along the value chain can be avoided.

How Mars Is Revolutionizing Their Supply Chain

Many companies are looking at their value chain as the focus area to drive large-scale change. But many are struggling to truly develop collaborative partnerships that will address complex societal and environmental issues.
