2018 UpPrize: BNY Mellon Social Innovation Challenge Launches March 1

Southwestern Pennsylvania entrepreneurs have two opportunities this year to compete for grants and technical assistance through UpPrize, a social innovation challenge sponsored by the BNY Mellon Foundation of Southwestern Pennsylvania and The Forbes Funds. In its third year of operation, UpPrize connects local entrepreneurs and innovators with the region's nonprofit community and the people they serve.

Pizza Hut “Starts a New Chapter” to Help All Kids Succeed through Reading, Takes Further Action to Support Literacy through Annual Giving Program

A lack of books in the home is directly linked to an increased likelihood that a child will read below his or her grade level by the fourth grade. In fact, 25 million children in the U.S. cannot read proficiently. And students who can’t read proficiently by third grade are four times more likely to leave school without a diploma than proficient readers, a huge barrier to meeting their full potential as adults.

That’s why Pizza Hut, the nation’s longest-standing corporate supporter of literacy, is kick-starting a giving program to tackle issues that lead to illiteracy. Through Pizza Hut: The Literacy Project – the company’s global commitment to literacy – the program will enable access to books and educational resources, empower teachers and inspire a lifelong love of reading.

Environment Scores Big Win With Zero-Waste(i) Legacy Project at Super Bowl LII

The NFL, in partnership with PepsiCo, Aramark, U.S. Bank Stadium, SMG and the Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority, scored a zero-waste legacy project at Super Bowl LII, with 91 percent of all trash generated on gameday from 67,612 fans responsibly recovered through composting, recycling and reuse. The landmark project marks the highest diversion rate achieved at U.S. Bank Stadium and at any previous Super Bowl, and aims to serve as the benchmark for future large-scale events.

The results are in following the big game: nearly 63 tons of the 69 tons of gameday waste were recovered through recycling or donation for reuse (62 percent) and composting (29 percent).

JetBlue and The New York Botanical Garden Start an Environmental Consortium Focusing on Conservation in the Caribbean

JetBlue, New York's Hometown Airline®, today announced the development of a Caribbean consortium with The New York Botanical Garden (NYBG). Aligned with other like-minded partners across multiple disciplines, this effort will address conservation and commerce in the Caribbean. The Consortium will start with a “Spotlight on Cuba” and will focus on other Caribbean destinations in the future. In 2016, JetBlue became the first U.S. airline to bring affordable and convenient commercial air travel to Cuba after more than 50 years.

During year one, this group will make recommendations on development and environmental issues, to help ensure that Cuba’s natural habitat is protected for future generations.

MTV and Get Schooled launched, “We are the Dream,” a multi-platform campaign to amplify resources for undocumented youth seeking higher education.

“The path from high school to college is confusing and stressful for the average high school senior, but even more so for undocumented students,” said Marie Groark, Executive Director of Get Schooled. “We are excited to partner with MTV to spread awareness among undocumented students and their allies that resources are available, college is possible, and they are not alone in their quest to get an education.”

Smithfield Foods Donates More Than 165,000 Pounds of Protein to Local Food Banks

Smithfield Foods, Inc. joined forces with Winn-Dixie, B&R Stores, and Fareway to donate more than 165,000 pounds of protein. Smithfield’s contribution was part of the company’s 2018 Helping Hungry Homes® donation tour. Now in the program’s 10th year, Helping Hungry Homes® is Smithfield’s signature hunger-relief initiative focused on alleviating hunger and helping Americans become more food secure. The donations, equivalent to more than 664,000 servings, will help families fight hunger across northeast Florida, Nebraska, and Western Iowa.
