In the months following 9/11, Karen Calder searched for a way to better serve her community. One day, she read a feasibility study about a new project called Classroom Central, a proposed nonprofit aimed at providing school supplies to children living in poverty. The study moved her to tears.

What distinguishes the Italian gestalt is that the essential character of the place grows out of community relationships fostered around a shared meal. But we don’t have to go miles across the sea to find this synergy. It can, & in fact, does exist in our own communities if we take the time to recognize and cultivate our foodshed’s infrastructure.
Today, Sodexo Stop Hunger Foundation announced five students as national Stephen J. Brady Stop Hunger Scholarship honorees and recognized five Sodexo employees as Heroes of Everyday Life® for their efforts in leading the fight against hunger in their local communities.

Students chosen to receive a new bicycle, helmet and books were selected by Communities In Schools of Metropolitan Detroit, which provides education and community resources to help students successfully learn, stay in school and continue the path to graduation. FCA US provided the bikes, helmets, books and 50 employees through its Motor Citizens volunteer program. Detroit Eastside Community Collaborative, which has helped establish miles of new bike lanes throughout the city, provided safety instruction to the new riders.
As part of the CITGO STEM Talent Pipeline Program, CITGO has partnered with the Calcasieu Parish School Board (CPSB) and McNeese State University to bring Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education to young minds through a hands-on learning experience called Engineering is Elementary (EiE).
In May, Sands China Academy hosted a graduation ceremony for the 111 Macao university students who completed Sands China’s Integrated Resort Internship Program. Sands China celebrated the students’ achievements and three graduates were presented with an “Impressive Performance Award” with a limited-edition souvenir by their department heads as a token of recognition for their exceptional performance.
A group of 35 Sands China Care Ambassadors spent an afternoon with 40 children and their parents from the Macau Down Syndrome Association, taking them on an “Amazing Race” through several DreamWorks Experience-themed adventures at Sands Cotai Central and The Venetian Macao. The day ended with a visit to Ice World.
