Conflict Minerals

In 2010, President Obama signed the Dodd-Frank Consumer Protection Act into law. Section 1502 of that act addresses the international trade and use of Conflict Minerals.

But what are Conflict Minerals and how do they affect our everyday lives? Like the similar issue of Conflict Diamonds or Blood Diamonds, the term Conflict Minerals refers to minerals mined in conditions of armed conflict and human rights abuses, mostly in the eastern provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Source Intelligence can help you understand some of the key points surrounding this issue and what it means for consumers and companies in the United States.

Conflict-Free Sourcing Initiative (CFSI) Releases Latest Reporting Conflict Minerals Reporting Template
One of the most important efforts to trace whether conflict minerals are entering global supply chains is the Conflict Minerals Reporting Template (CMRT) developed by the Conflict-Free Sourcing Initiative (CFSI). The template is periodically updated to reflect new smelters, changes in regulations and other changes in the global supply chain network. CFSI has now released the CMRT version 4.20, which is now integrated into Source Intelligence’s robust SaaS platform to provide customers the most efficient and comprehensive data collection, validation and reporting system.

NGO Recommends Going Beyond Conflict Minerals Compliance
NGO rankings/ratings, regardless of the subject matter, always heighten program manager’s and even board room senses. Will the work that I, as the program manager, did for my company to comply be represented well? Will the level of compliance we, as the board room, decided to have, be enough for the NGO? Responsible Sourcing Network (RSN), in response to their recent report ranking 155 large cap companies for conflict minerals, discloses their intention of their efforts to identify trends and determine areas for improvement among companies, with the ultimate goal to encourage all companies to develop a robust conflict minerals program.
