In today’s global marketplace, many companies are seizing opportunities to expand their businesses’ footprint through new partnerships, mergers and acquisitions. But as these companies work to bring their new assets or partnerships into the company fold, many aren’t prepared to integrate their environment, health and safety (EHS) programs.

In our experience, EHS programs are most successful when they’re embedded in company culture, where employees feel encouraged and compelled to play an active role in program initiatives.

For the third consecutive year, in conjunction with the Chicago Parks Foundation and the Alliance for the Great Lakes, CITGO sponsored a Mid-Coast Cleanup as a part of its Caring for Our Coast initiative. Earlier this fall, students from King College Prep and the Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences joined volunteers from the CITGO Lemont Refinery for a cleanup project at the 41st Street Beach in Chicago. In a one-mile area, the group collected 94.9 pounds of trash in just a few hours. The most abundant items picked up were cigarette butts and plastic water bottles.

As communities across the country recognize the importance of recycling in honor of America Recycles Day on Nov. 15, Keep America Beautiful and The Coca-Cola Foundation announced that they will be awarding 62 grants to communities in 30 states to make recycling bins more readily available and convenient.

Given last week’s news, it’s even more important for business to understand the need to resonate with all stakeholders and lead the way with a responsible mind-set.
