First Cohort of 2-Year Bank On Fellows Launches in Five Coaltions

The Cities for Financial Empowerment Fund (CFE Fund) announced today the awarding of five 2-year fellowships to advance local Bank On coalition operations and generate best practices for coalitions across the country. Local Bank On coalitions across the country, led by or working closely with local government, work to expand access to safe and appropriate financial products and services to the over 65 million people outside of the mainstream financial system who rely on alternative, costly financial services. The Bank On Fellowship program is supported by Wells Fargo, whose $1 million investment supports Bank On Fellows work for 2 years, as well as providing broader support for Bank On efforts to connect residents to safe, appropriate accounts.

History Wins: Partners in Preservation Awards $2 Million in Grants for Main Street Projects

American Express, The National Trust for Historic Preservation and Main Street America announced today the winners of the Partners in Preservation: Main Streets. The 11 winning historic sites, determined by popular vote, will receive a total of $1.5 million in grants to fund their respective preservation projects. An additional $500,000 in grants was provided to the nonprofit partners of the 25 main street communities that participated in the program at the outset of the campaign to help raise awareness about their preservation needs.

LGBT Neighborhoods: Finding Community in Suburbia

Historically speaking, finding an LGBT-friendly neighborhood was easier to do in a city than it was in the suburbs. The Castro in San Francisco, Chelsea in New York City, and Dupont Circle in Washington, D.C., are three of the most recognizable LGBT neighborhoods in the United States. Elsewhere in the world, there’s Chueca in Madrid, Nollendorfplatz in Berlin, and Le Marais in Paris, to name a few.

Today, the “gayborhood” is slowly making the move away from cities and into the suburbs.

Dallas had been in foster care for five years, and joined her forever family at age 11. Soon after, The Harris family opened their home to another teen, Paula, who was in and out of foster care for nine years. She was adopted at age 14. Boeing Announces More Than $50 Million in Grants to Support Nonprofits Worldwide

Boeing today announced more than $50 million in grants to more than 500 nonprofit organizations across 50 countries globally. The annual contributions include a three-year commitment of more than $25 million in support of veterans’ recovery and rehabilitation programs and transition services. The charitable grants package will fund programs through 2018 and supplement an anticipated $117 million in company-wide business and employee contributions to similar causes—bringing Boeing’s total community investments to approximately $167 million this year alone.
