Integrity, initiative, judgment, courage and enthusiasm – these are traits businesses across America seek in job candidates. They also happen to be qualities servicemen and servicewomen develop in the military.

As a citizen, I honor the tremendous sacrifices made by these men and women. As a CEO, I also recognize how these attributes make them invaluable to the workforce. I witness this positive impact daily. More than 2,000 veterans work at Duke Energy, from engineers who operate our nuclear fleet, to lineworkers who connect our customers to the grid. Each one plays a critical role in powering the lives of 25 million people.

Charlotte Bittner, 9, wants to be a veterinarian and own an animal clinic when she grows up. Bella Mercedes Ahgupuk, 14, wants to be a health aide. They both agree that participating in Lemonade Day has helped start them on the path toward their future careers. Every year on November 11, we honor those who have made sacrifices to serve our country in the military. Americans know this day as Veterans Day, and we honor those who have served and are still with us. In Canada it’s called Remembrance Day, and we honor those who have sacrificed their lives for their country.

MilliporeSigma employees volunteer to run the experiments in the cube and answer STEM questions, giving students the opportunity to talk with people who work in science about what they do. Eight volunteers attended the Bancroft Curiosity Cube visit.

With Veteran’s Day just around the corner, we wanted to pause and take a moment to reflect and share our thanks to those who’ve dedicated their lives in service to our great country. We’re proud of the many men and women in the armed forces who’ve fought and continue to fight for freedom.

Earlier this month, I joined a team of Dell volunteers from sales and the Dell Veterans and Supporters Employee Resource Group to support UTR and their “40 Million Stories” Campaign. By manning the UTR recording studio at the recent Association of the U.S. Army (AUSA) Exposition in Washington, D.C., we were able to see first-hand how UTR records soldiers reading bedtime stories out-loud for their children to listen to while they’re away.

A year ago, HP announced a quest with our agencies to transform the advertising industry. We challenged partners to significantly increase the number of women and U.S. minorities in top creative and strategic roles on our accounts. Today, we are publishing the first proof of our commitment and, more importantly, sharing our learnings and path forward.
