This simple gesture makes a great impact in an area where 54 percent of the population is practicing open defecation.

Haiti is the poorest country in the Western hemisphere. Over 80 percent of Haitian citizens live under the poverty line. Only 16 percent of rural Haiti has adequate sanitation and less than one-third have safe drinking water.
