We see the lasting, positive effect on society when people of differing abilities – individuals with cognitive, physical, and other disabilities, as well as military veterans – have the power to apply their unique talents in meaningful ways. That is why we are so passionate about introducing their contributions throughout our communities. For more than 55 years, we have charted a path to inclusion for this remarkable yet underserved population.

What motivates nonprofits and volunteers to engage in skills-based volunteering? Nonprofits use skills-based volunteering to strengthen their infrastructure in ways that better equip them to solve our communities’ challenges. Many volunteers give their skills to help solve a challenge for an organization addressing an issue they care about or to feel connected to the community. In this SNCR 2020 article, Taproot Foundation and Team4Tech partnered to further the social sector’s understanding of the leadership development benefits of skills-based volunteering—focusing exclusively on the nonprofit’s outcomes of such initiatives.

Last week, the 2018 Global Engagement Forum: Live convened leaders and experts from business, government, and nonprofit organizations to collaborate around solving specific problems within the context of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Hosted by PYXERA Global, the Forum convened over 300 leaders, experts, and stakeholders in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.

Gildan, in partnership with the Batey Relief Alliance (BRA), organized its second “Blindness Prevention” program for the community of San Pedro de Macoris, San Antonio de Guerra and other areas of eastern Dominican Republic. The event took place over four consecutive days providing 540 patients free ophthalmological consultations and prescription lenses.

America Recycles Day, a Keep America Beautiful national initiative that takes place on and in the weeks leading into Nov. 15, recognizes the economic, environmental and social benefits of recycling, and provides an educational platform to raise awareness about the value of reducing, reusing and recycling – every day – throughout the year.

There are more than 250,000 women living in the United States today who were diagnosed with breast cancer at age 40 or younger (U.S. Census). These women represent 5-7% of all breast cancer patients diagnosed, annually, in the United States.

Every year in the U.S., 27,000 children are diagnosed with critical illnesses. That’s 27,000 families whose lives are turned upside down. Play dates, soccer games, and sleepovers are replaced with doctor appointments, hospital stays and medical treatments.

But, when they arrive at Give Kids The World, families are transported to a storybook world straight from a child’s dreams. At this 84-acre, nonprofit resort in Central Florida, critically ill children and their families receive weeklong, cost-free vacations complete with accommodations, transportation, meals, donated attraction tickets and so much more.
