Mars, Incorporated released its sixth annual Principles in Action Summary, spotlighting progress the company has made on commitments in the areas of sustainability, health and wellbeing, food safety, responsible marketing, and workplace engagement. The company’s ‘report card’ reflects the cumulative efforts of its diverse business segments, including Petcare, Chocolate, Wrigley, Food, Drinks and Symbioscience.

At a recent fundraising luncheon for Seattle’s American Cancer Society chapter aboard ms Amsterdam, Holland America Line President Orlando Ashford spoke about his company’s commitment to raising money that will save lives and help end cancer. The cruise line hosted the fundraiser Sunday, June 12, at the Port of Seattle as a launch event for Hope Gala, an ASC black-tie celebration, live auction and exclusive dining experience to be held in September featuring Seattle chefs and local vintners.

The Angola Sickle Cell Initiative, a public-private partnership of the Angola Ministry of Health, the Baylor College of Medicine International Pediatric AIDS Initiative (BIPAI), Texas Children’s Hospital and Chevron, is teaming up with the global biopharmaceutical company Bristol-Myers Squibb to provide children with sickle cell disease in Angola with an effective medication to which many patients in the country have lacked access.

No child should ever die from a mosquito bite. Yet, today, in an era of extraordinary medical advancement, a child dies of mosquito-borne malaria every two minutes. Last year, this agonizing blood disease caused by the malaria parasite claimed nearly half a million lives—most of them children.

Still, there’s unprecedented cause for optimism. After 15 years of coordinated efforts to fight malaria, we’re seeing progress: Malaria deaths have declined 60 percent since 2000, meaning more than six million lives have been saved. During that same period, an analysis by the Roll Back Malaria initiative shows that 57 countries have reduced malaria cases by 75 percent or more.
