On the third and final stop of Timberland’s three-city 2018 urban greening tour, close to 100 volunteers transformed a vacant lot in Los Angeles into a resident-driven urban farm to benefit the local homeless population. Volunteers from Timberland, Journeys, members of the local community and the Student Conservation Association joined efforts to bring green space to this urban area.

“While we’re a very prosperous nation, there is a lot of need in this country,” says Steve Carlberg, managing director of infrastructure and security for Feeding America. One grave need in America: food.

On January 3, 2019, Xylem employee volunteers in Pune and Thane completed the installation of ten AquaHomes into households in the villages of Mugoan and Masaad, India. The volunteers spent four days installing the AquaHomes, which provide the households with solar power and clean water for the first time. Prior to this project, the families were using kerosene lamps as their only source of light in their homes. Additionally, the families collected water from contaminated wells in the community, causing many illnesses and diseases among villagers. Xylem is proud to help families and communities through this powerful project in partnership with Planet Water Foundation.

Consumers Energy is strengthening its commitment to rural Michigan communities by announcing a new competition to provide funding for projects that will help energize towns in the Lower Peninsula. The “Put Your Town on the Map” competition will provide a total of $15,000 to three initiatives that are designed to build a stronger sense of community. Up to 10 finalist communities will compete for the funding at the 2019 Small Town and Rural Development Conference on April 17 in Thompsonville, Mich.

2018 proved to be an active year in Corporate Social Responsibility with issues related to sustainability, globalization, advocacy on social issues and multiple natural disasters in the forefront.

I had the exciting opportunity to interview Amiko Foster of Youth Finance Institute of America (YFIA), a California-based nonprofit that provides personal finance education programs designed to teach finance life skills to youth in disadvantaged areas.
