In the World: Supporting Survivors of the Japanese Earthquake

I joined Barclays in 2010 on their graduate scheme and now work in the Tokyo office as an Analyst. My job is to support our sales team who mainly deal with structured Barclays products. I first started volunteering after the Tohoku disaster in 2011, when my colleagues and I organised a trip to Otsuchi town to help with the relief effort. Although there were many people who wanted to assist, at the time there was not a lot of organised support.

Joy Stoddard is the Development and Outreach Director for Whole Planet Foundation, the nonprofit arm of Whole Foods Market. We were lucky enough to have a conversation with Joy about her motivation to give back, stemming from her earliest job as a candy striper to her career with Whole Foods. Joy has traveled the world working with microentrepreneurs and shared her unique perspective of having sought out opportunities to make an impact through for-profit businesses and nonprofit organizations alike.

Subaru Donates 50 Cars to Meals on Wheels America in Celebration of 50th Anniversary in the U.S.

In celebration of its 50th anniversary, and in keeping with its philosophy of supporting local communities, Subaru of America, Inc. announced today its donation of 50 vehicles to Meals on Wheels America. This fall, 50 new 2018 Subaru Outback vehicles will be donated to select Meals on Wheels programs throughout the county, to be used in the delivery of an estimated 53,000 meals to an additional 3,700 seniors across 39 states. The donation will address the Meals on Wheels network’s growing demand for fuel-efficient, versatile and safe delivery vehicles to enable our nation’s most vulnerable seniors to live nourished lives with independence and dignity.

Virtual 10K Aims to Help Entrepreneurs in Developing Countries

The 10K is hosted by Whole Planet Foundation, a nonprofit established by Whole Foods Market. The foundation pledges to give 100 percent of registration fees to “fund microcredit loans to lift entrepreneurs and their families out of poverty in 69 countries.” Many of the entrepreneurs are women in developing countries. Love to get your body moving? Want to make a difference for people living in poverty all over the world? Join Whole Planet Foundation’s Virtual 10K Run, which kicks off today. Event registration fees will benefit impoverished entrepreneurs with the chance to start or expand a home-based business and lift themselves and their families out of poverty. In fact, the first microloan from Whole Planet Foundation’s partner in Rwanda is the same as the price of registration, $35.

Clooney Foundation for Justice Partners with UNICEF to Open Seven Public Schools to Syrian Refugee Children in Lebanon

The Clooney Foundation for Justice today announced a $2.25 million partnership, which includes a generous donation from Google.org, and a $1 million technology grant from HP, to support formal education for Syrian refugees in Lebanon. The partnership with UNICEF will help seven public schools to provide critical education opportunities to nearly 3,000 currently out-of-school refugee students this school year, and will also support a pilot of technology tools in these schools to advance learning outcomes for refugee children.
