Kevin and Nancy Sell call themselves “empty nesters on a mission.” Through their non-profit Hearts of Hope International, their mission now is to equip residents of Kiambu County, Kenya, many of whom are HIV positive widows and orphans, with skills training by building a vocational school in partnership with the Dorcas Orphans and Widows Ministry.
I had the exciting opportunity to interview Amiko Foster of Youth Finance Institute of America (YFIA), a California-based nonprofit that provides personal finance education programs designed to teach finance life skills to youth in disadvantaged areas. Since launching their program in 2015, YFIA’s entirely volunteer-based staff has been able to serve over 1200 youth to date.
Earlier this year, Erb Institute student, Chris Owen, MBA/MS 2020, worked with Casa María Amor in Cuenca, Ecuador via an Erb Institute Impact Project. This video features such a project. Casa María Amor is a women’s shelter on the outskirts of Cuenca in the Andes Mountains. Chris conceived, developed and launched an Erb Impact project to help the women of Casa María Amor develop skills aimed at achieving economic independence after leaving abusive relationships.
This week we celebrate Veteran’s Day and as a tribute to the people who serve in our military, we are showcasing a skills-based volunteer project that supports veteran-owned small businesses. Based in Austin, TX, PeopleFund is an organization that creates economic opportunity and financial stability for underserved entrepreneurs in Texas. Their work touches women, minorities, ex-offenders, members of the LGBT community and veterans by providing access to capital, education and resources to build healthy small businesses and, in the process, improve economic mobility for their families and the community.
Today, American Express, the National Trust for Historic Preservation and Main Street America announced the winners of the 2018 Partners in Preservation: Main Streets campaign. The 11 winning historic sites will receive a total of $1.6 million in grants to fund their respective preservation projects. At the outset of the campaign, an additional $400,000 was allocated to the 20 Main Street communities that participated in the program to increase public awareness of the importance of these historic places and build grassroots support for the participating Main Street districts.

Speaking at the first annual L’Attitude conference, which highlights the expanding impact of Hispanics in the U.S., Sloan noted Wells Fargo’s continued focus on this growing market in recent years. The company, he said, has made a 10-year, $125 billion commitment to Hispanic homeownership financing and set aside $100 million for investment in minority- and women-owned small businesses.
